      Corpus Christi College, Cambridge (UK) invites applications for one Early-Career Research Fellowship tenable for four years from 1 October 2026. Eligible applicants are expected to be at an early stage of their career (and may not yet have completed their doctoral work). If postdoctoral, this is defined as being within two years from the date of a successful viva voce examination at the time of application. This year applications will be considered in the following subjects: Modern and Medieval Languages; Classics; Linguistics; Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.

      An Early-Career Research Fellow is expected to pursue learning and research in their chosen field and publish the results. The College's academic environment provides favourable conditions for research, which will be undertaken freely and without oversight on the part of the College.
      Early-Career Research Fellows are permitted to teach up to six hours per week for additional remuneration, and are expected to participate in the intellectual life of Leckhampton (the College's second site where most of its postgraduates are housed).

      The Classics Department seeks to appoint a Senior Teaching Fellow on a 0.62 (1st year) and 0.5 (2nd and 3rd year) basis for a fixed-term period of 3 years from 1 September 2025 to 31 August 2028.

      The purpose of this post is to provide teaching in Roman history, as well as pastoral and administrative cover.
      You will need to have a research specialism in Roman Imperial History and the ability to teach Latin literature at UG level.
      About You
      You will organise and teach the term-long first-year undergraduate core module Roman Culture and Society<https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/classics/intranets/students/modules/rcs> (including sessions on study skills), and, in your first year, Introduction to Roman History<https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/classics/intranets/students/modules/introhist>, and convene and teach an Honours-level optional module each year. In the first year this will be 'The Roman Empire from Tiberius to Hadrian'<https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/classics/intranets/students/modules/tibtohad>.
      In the second year you will teach either the module 'The Transformation of Roman Society Under Augustus'<https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/classics/intranets/students/modules/aug> or another Roman History module of your own devising, in consultation with the Head of Department.
      In the third year you will either repeat 'The Roman Empire from Tiberius to Hadrian' <https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/classics/intranets/students/modules/tibtohad> or, again, devise a new module of your choice.

      You will offer classes on Latin texts relevant to the Honours-level modules you teach to students with advanced Latin.
      You will supervise Honours dissertations and mark exams and assessed work as required. You will need experience in lecturing and leading seminars, as well as in marking, supervising and offering constructive feedback.
      This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate with existing teaching experience to expand their experience within a supportive department, with undergraduates from a wide variety of backgrounds. You will devise your own teaching materials within the scope of the current prescriptions for these modules and have the potential to devise your own module reflecting your research interests, depending on Departmental needs.
      You will be involved in many aspects of departmental life, tracking students' progress, participating in staff meetings and Open Days and assisting in our engagement work with local schools and the wider public. You will be expected to be available to students 2 days a week in the department during term time. You will also have the opportunity to gain experience in academic administrative roles by acting as personal tutor to students, and through undertaking administrative duties, as reasonably requested by the Head of Department.

      Die Stelle ist im Rahmen des von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft geförderten Projekts Papyri Lipsienses III + IV: Edition, Kommentierung und Übersetzung unedierter Papyri und Ostraka der Leipziger Papyrussammlung (Homer, Hesiod, Thukydides et al.) zu besetzen. Ziel des Projekts ist es, sämtliche verbleibenden nicht-edierten literarischen Papyri sowie ausgewählte nicht-edierte dokumentarische Leipziger Papyri und Ostraka in zwei Teilpublikationen (Arbeitstitel: P.Lips. III und P.Lips. IV) zu veröffentlichen und die 1906 begonnene und 2002 wiederaufgenommene systematische Edition der Leipziger Sammlung fortzuführen. Nach Abschluss des Editionsprojekts wird die Edition sämtlicher literarischer Papyri der Leipziger Sammlung erreicht sein.

      ABSTRACT:
      The study of ancient divination has increasingly become a focus of research over the past few decades, with both institutionalized and individual (‘lived’) practices attracting scholarly interest. However, it is only in recent years that one fundamental aspect concerning the significance of divination has begun to receive attention: the nature, meaning, and role of authority. 
       
      In the view of contemporaries, ancient divination was a form of communication with the divine sphere. It allowed individuals, regardless of their social status, to ascertain the opinion of the supernatural regarding a given situation and, in turn, to communicate this information. As such, divination played a crucial role in Greek and Roman societies, shaping both private life and political affairs. Despite its centrality, divination was neither a fixed and coherent nor a universally valid or universally accepted system but rather a contested space where various specialists and techniques competed for legitimacy. At the heart of this competition was the issue of authority—how it was constructed, recognized, and maintained. While previous scholarship has explored specific divinatory practices and their political uses, the broader relationship between divination and authority remains insufficiently examined. This conference, therefore, seeks to explore both the authority of divination (how divination as a system gained credibility) and the authority in divination (how individual diviners established and maintained their status). 
       
      In what ways was  the authority of the supernatural conveyed through divinatory practices used in different contexts of the Greek and Roman world? How did ancient societies negotiate which individuals could claim divinatory authority? How did divination reinforce the authority of the powerful? How did divination empower marginalized individuals? What role did divinatory rituals, objects, and performances play in asserting authority? What theoretical concepts and methodological approaches enable a better understanding of historical developments related to these questions? By addressing these and similar issues, this conference will contribute to broader discussions on religious expertise, materiality, and ancient Mediterranean belief systems, and ultimately place the still-young study of the significance of authority in the field of divination on a new foundation.

      Announcement of 2 Scholarships for Doctoral Studies (October 2026 -September 2023) in the Doctoral program ‘Ancient Languages and Texts’ of the Berlin Graduate school of Ancient Studies.

      The Graduate School Scholarship Program (GSSP) of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is offering two (2) doctoral scholarships for aspiring PhD students within the framework of the “Ancient Languages and Texts” doctoral program of the BerGSAS, https://www.berliner-antike-kolleg.org/en/bergsas/programme/alt/index.html

      We welcome applications from highly qualified graduates from the fields of:

      Ancient History, History of Late Antiquity, and the Early Middle Ages, Ancient Oriental Languages, Ancient Philology – Greek (incl. Byzantine Greek) and Latin (Classical Latin, Middle and Modern latin) –, Egyptology (incl. Coptology), Protestant Theology, Iranian Studies, Comparative Indo-European Linguistics, Religious Studies, Roman Law.

      Applicants must hold an excellent master's degree (MA, MSt, or MSc) in one of the aforementioned disciplines or be very close to completion. Very close to completion means that the Master’s thesis must have been submitted and has already been graded at the time of application.

       

      Objectives of the doctoral program “Ancient Languages and Texts”

      The program “Ancient Languages and Texts” (ALT), focuses on the written heritage of ancient cultures which includes literary works as well as documentary texts, such as inscriptions and papyri. Also, research is carried out into phenomena of mediality such as the interaction between texts and pictorial representations. In this line of inquiry, traditional philological methods are combined with historical and cultural issues. In addition to that, particular emphasis is placed on theories and approaches of modern literary studies and linguistics. Topics and methods in the digital humanities and computer philology also belong to the program ALT. Thus, the program is characterized by a plurality of research methods and a wide understanding of the concept of ‘a text’. Applicants are expected to have sufficient command of the relevant ancient languages for their dissertation project. During the course, doctoral researchers are required to complete the curriculum of the doctoral program (cf. academic rules and regulations on website).

       

      Who can apply? (please note that these requirements are binding)

      - This call is open ONLY to applicants who are not German citizens

      - Applicants must not have completed a PhD previously

      - The Master’s degree must not have been completed before March 1, 2020

      - Applicants must not have resided in Germany continuously before December 1, 2024


      Duration of the scholarship and funding

      The scholarship is available from October 2026 (Berlin winter semester 2026/27) for four years, subject to a satisfactory annual progress review. In accordance with DAAD guidelines, the scholarship holders receive a stipend of 1,300 Euros a month, a travel allowance, payments towards health, accident and liability insurance cover, allowances for study and research (and, where applicable, rent and family allowances) as well as financial support for a pre-sessional German language course. Plus, material resources of 1,000 Euros per year, administered by the supervisor’s institute. Research stays outside of Germany during the funding period may be supported if they do not exceed 25% of the total funding period, and do not take place directly at the beginning of the funding period.

      SNF Consolidator Project "Ageing and Old Age in the 4th–6th Century Roman Empire: Religious, Legal, Social, and Physical Dimensions" (RomAge): Doctoral and Postdoctoral Position

       

      The RomAge project investigates ageing as a multifaceted socio-cultural phenomenon in Late Antiquity, with particular focus on how the rise of Christianity transformed social norms and perceptions of old age. Inspired by contemporary social gerontology, the project explores ageing as a complex construct encompassing gender, class, and geo-ethnic identity.

      RomAge examines how the Christian Church-through its legislation, ethical principles, and institutional influence-reshaped understandings of ageing across various social groups and regions of the Roman Empire.

      Neo-Latin in the Modern World

      In January 2026, the Universities of Innsbruck and Freiburg i.Br. will launch a research project on Neo-Latin literature, for which 12 additional collaborators are sought. This Special Research Area (SRA) entitled Neo-Latin in the Modern World intends to continue and expand the institutions' existing research focus on Neo-Latin-established not least by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Neo-Latin Studies-in the years 2026-33.


      The SRA aims to solve two crucial problems in Neo-Latin studies: While Neo-Latin research has made considerable progress in recent decades, it continues to struggle with two problems: First, the cultural and lifeworld anchoring of early modern Latinity has hitherto only been selectively researched and, thus, the understanding of its manifold functions during this era remains blurred. Secondly, most Neo-Latin texts remain largely inaccessible to early modern researchers who are not familiar with Latin, which is why they frequently ignore the results of Neo-Latin studies.

      The SRA will consist of seven thematically defined sub-projects (six in Innsbruck and one in Freiburg i.Br.). In addition, there will be a general unit that will set up a general database and develop the SRA's digital infrastructure. The topics of the seven thematic sub-projects are listed below, along with their PIs:

        *   Early Modern Classics: Ancient Greek and Neo-Latin in the World (William M. Barton): An inclusive and panoramic study of works produced in Ancient Greek in the Neo-Latin world from the Renaissance until c. 1850. Aiming to grasp the widest extent of 'New Ancient Greek' production, this sub-project's representative corpus will include, e.g., New Ancient Greek production outside of Europe, women's New Ancient Greek, Ancient Greek as a language of translation, and the continued use of Ancient Greek by Greek-speakers into the 19th century.

        *   Viva vox: Oral Neo-Latin (Martin Korenjak): In contrast to the oral use of modern languages, the one of 'dead' languages from the past, such as Latin, has been little studied so far. This project tries to make good for this by creating a proper source basis, analysing the phenomenon along a number of pertinent questions, and producing a detailed overview, including an assessment of the similarities and differences between the oral use of a living and a 'dead' language.

        *   Latin of Queens, Abbesses, Scientists: Women's Voices in Neo-Latin (1450-1800) (Johanna Luggin): Latin literature written by women is, after centuries of neglect, finally seeing a rise of research interest. This project will elucidate highly neglected areas of women's interactions with Latin, examine how women were able to learn Latin despite all obstacles, how they used it in their writings and how these were received.

        *   Neo-Latin Translations: Bilingual Books for Early Modern Readers (Federica Rossetti): The relevance of Neo-Latin as a language of dissemination is evident in the frequent publication of bi and multilingual editions, where texts in ancient (Greek, Aramaic, Syriac, etc.) or vernacular languages appear alongside Neo-Latin translations - or vice versa. Who were these editions intended for, and how did they meet readers' expectations? This research will offer the first systematic study of multilingual editions in the early modern period.

        *   Neo-Latin and the Newcomers: Catholic Inculturation(s) (Patryk Ryczkowski): What was the role of Latin in the processes of inclusion into Catholic culture? How did communities emerging and re-orientating themselves in the Church use Latin (literature) to adopt Catholic discourse and, conversely, to mark their specific profile? In particular, the project will look into Eastern Catholicism and Catholic monastic communities.

        *   Canones of Neo-Latin Texts (Florian Schaffenrath): Which Neo-Latin texts have been made accessible through editions, translations, or commentaries? Which ones are on the reading lists of schools and universities? Which Neo-Latin texts are assumed to be known in academic literature like commentaries? Research into such questions will lead to an understanding of canon formation in the early modern period.

        *   The Nachleben of Neo-Latin Literature (Stefan Tilg, Freiburg i.Br.): What legacy does Neo-Latin have as a language, literature, and culture? This project examines the reception history of Neo-Latin in modern languages and cultures from c. 1800 to the present day. It deals with the ongoing relevance of authors, genres, motifs and literary approaches, but also of terms and phrases, cognitive patterns and broader concepts and practices of Neo-Latin literary culture. Candidates are expected to write a monograph in one of these areas.

      For each of the sub-projects based in Innsbruck, we are looking for a PreDoc-i.e. a candidate who has completed a Master's degree in Classics or a subject specialising in the early modern period-who would like to dedicate a dissertation to one of these Neo-Latin topics. We are looking for a PostDoc for the position in Freiburg.

      In addition, we are looking for four PreDocs and one PostDoc for the SRA's digital platform: The task of these employees consists of setting up and maintaining a database, digitising texts, and preparing these texts for the use of new technologies. Additional scientific activities are not mandatory for these employees.

      All positions start January 1, 2026. PreDoc positions last for three years and can then be converted into a PostDoc position. PostDoc positions last for four years. After the first four years (2026-29), the SRA can be extended for another four years.


      The ideal requirements for candidates are therefore:

        *   Master's degree (resp. PhD) in a relevant subject

        *   interest in writing a PhD thesis in the field of Neo-Latin

        *   some experience in the field of Neo-Latin

        *   readiness to work in an international research team

        *   excellent Latin (for the collaborators in one of the seven sub-projects)

        *   good skills in digital humanities (for the collaborators working at the digital platform)

      zu besetzen. Angeboten wird eine für 3 Jahre befristete Vollzeitstelle (100%). Es besteht die Möglichkeit, die Stelle je nach den rechtlichen Möglichkeiten zu verlängern. Die Lehrverpflichtung beträgt bei Vollzeit 4 SWS.

       

      Ihre Aufgaben:

      Das Arbeitsverhältnis wird zunächst befristet auf sechs Jahre als Assistenzprofessor:in mit Qualifizierungsvereinbarung eingegangen. Ziel ist die Überleitung in ein unbefristetes Arbeitsverhältnis als Assoziierte:r Professorin.

      Der/die Stelleninhaber:in soll die Klassische Philologie in Forschung und Lehre vertreten. Voraussetzung ist ein Forschungsschwerpunkt in der griechischen Literatur (vorzugsweise der Klassik und/oder der Kaiserzeit). Zusätzliche Forschungsinteressen im Bereich der lateinischen Literatur, insbesondere der republikanischen und augusteischen Epoche, sind erwünscht. Erforderlich ist die Bereitschaft zur engen Zusammenarbeit in Forschung und Lehre mit den Nachbarfächern, insbesondere Alte Geschichte und Archäologie, und zur aktiven Mitgestaltung des transdisziplinären und interuniversitären Doktoratsprogramms „Antike Kulturen des Mittelmeerraums“. Der/die Stelleninhaber:in bringt sich in den fakultären Schwerpunktbereich „Transmediterrane Verflechtungen – Bewegungen und Beziehungen im Mittelmeerraum und darüber hinaus“ und in das gleichlautende Doktoratsprogramm sowie ggf. in den universitären Profilbereich „Dimensionen Europas“ ein.
