Workshop – 20-22 May, 2026 – University of Groningen
The ancient world occupies a particular position in the history of religious toleration, having been identified as a period in which polytheistic religions naturally tolerated religious difference. This rosy picture has been questioned in recent scholarship, which has moved away from the teleological assumptions, the essentialized view on religion, and the supposed distinction between religion and state that underpin the traditional view.
This workshop seeks to contribute to the renewal of the study of religious toleration in Classical Antiquity by considering it as one particular way of dealing with religious difference. Indeed, toleration can be defined as ‘the conditional acceptance of, or non-interference with, beliefs, actions or practices that one considers to be wrong but still “tolerable,” such that they should not be prohibited or constrained.’ Toleration is therefore to be understood as a social practice that deals with an unavoidable fact of social life, namely social differences between individuals and groups. Toleration is an intentional and voluntary way of dealing with such difference, for otherwise it cannot be distinguished from, e.g., indifference or the material impossibility of suppression. Thus, a discussion of toleration draws our attention to the norms of a society, social structure, and individual agency as crucial factors which shape practices of dealing with difference. Understanding toleration as a social practice also implies it has a flexible connection with justifications: the latter are to be situated on a spectrum from post-factum rationalisations of existing social practices to attempts to bring about change in these practices.
This workshop is interested in contributions that address the following three questions:
- What factors determine that a society identifies groups or individuals as an ‘out-group’ or as deviant (e.g. deviant behaviour, newness or foreignness)?
- How did societies deal with such differences? What range of practices existed and which of these can be labelled as tolerant or intolerant? Which legal and moral constraints determined individual as well as group behaviour towards deviancy?
- On what grounds was toleration or suppression justified? Which philosophical, moral or practical reasons could be adduced for either position?
We welcome especially papers on case studies that address topics different from the ones often adduced in scholarship on toleration (such as the condemnation of Socrates, the suppression of the bacchanalia, the suppression of Jewish revolt). Given our interest in toleration as a social practice, we are particularly interested in papers that offer a detailed contextualisation for specific cities, groups or sets of sources. The focus of the workshop lies on practices of (in)toleration in Greco-Roman antiquity, but we welcome also contributions on Judaism, early Christianity and Manichaeism.

The Department of Classics at Columbia University invites applications for a one-year publication fellowship for the period July 1, 2025 - June 30, 2026 in the Classics and adjacent fields funded by the Stanwood Cockey Lodge Fund. The fellowship is meant to assist an early career scholar towards substantial progress in publication of a monograph in one of these fields. Candidates are asked to provide a CV, cover letter, description of project, and substantially finalized version of sample chapter.
The Lodge Fellowship recipient will hold the rank of Postdoctoral Research Scholar or Associate Research Scholar in the Department of Classics and is expected to take full part in the intellectual life of the department. In addition, the fellowship recipient will be expected to give three presentations on their project in the Department of Classics during the course of the academic year 2025-26. The fellowship recipient is expected to reside in the New York area. Upon completion of the project, the fellowship recipient will inform the Lodge Board, and acknowledge the support of the Lodge Fund in all published outputs.
$82,000 salary + $1000 research allowance.

The PhD candidates will develop independent projects on specific themes related to this research program:
* Topic 1: A comparative study of ancient monarchs who
introduced significant or controversial religious innovations and the factors that contributed to their success or failure.
* Topic 2: A comparative study of the presence, role, and
significance of monarchical elements in other constitutional forms, such as democracy, the republic, and oligarchy.
Within this framework there is considerable flexibility in the choice of monarchies, constitutions, and cultures studied and in the methodological approach taken.
All PhD candidates have a supervisory panel consisting of at least three members. The scholars will be supervised by myself and Dr Marko Vitas, a recent Brown PhD graduate qualified in both Classical Studies and Assyriology/Near Eastern Studies; possible other panel members include Dr Tatiana Bur or Dr Estelle Strazdins (Ancient Greece), Dr Meaghan McEvoy (Late Antiquity & Byzantium), and colleagues from the College of Asia and the Pacific and/or the School of Archaeology, depending on the precise topic.
Funding & Research Environment
The scholarship offers a tax-free stipend of $38,154 (Australian
dollars) per annum for 3.5 years, with the option of a 6-month extension.
The successful candidates will be eligible to apply for Research School of Humanities and the Arts research funding (currently up to
$7,000 per candidature for PhD projects which include fieldwork/archival research).
Additional funding for conference travel will be provided to the PhD scholars through the Future Fellowship scheme.
All PhD students are allocated their own workspace in a shared office in the Centre for Classical Studies, adjacent to the ANU Classics Museum and the offices of Classics staff members. We host a number of visiting local and international scholars each year for seminars, colloquia, and workshops.
We endeavour to offer all PhD candidates teaching opportunities in Classics, but we cannot guarantee these in advance. Our PhD students can take Advanced Greek and Latin courses alongside senior undergraduates to strengthen their reading abilities in these languages.
The ideal start date would be the beginning of 2026, but there is a certain amount of flexibility (e.g. if candidates from the Northern Hemisphere need to start in September/October 2025 or an equivalent time in 2026).

Mit großer Freude geben wir den erfolgreichen Abschluss der ersten Phase des durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) geförderten Projekts ARCHAthen bekannt.
Sämtliche Archivalien, die im Rahmen dieses zunächst auf drei Jahre bewilligten Projekts „Archive des DAI Athen und die Archäologie Griechenlands“ (ARCHAthen) der Förderlinie LIS zur „Erschließung und Digitalisierung archivalischer Quellen“ (SP 1148/2-1) bearbeitet wurden, sind im Open Access zugänglich gemacht worden. Der Forschung und der interessierten Öffentlichkeit stehen nun ein bedeutender Teil unseres dienstlichen Schriftguts aus den Jahren 1874 bis 1944, sechs ausgewählte Nachlässe mit wertvollen Forschungsdaten bedeutender Archäologinnen und Archäologen sowie die Luftbildaufnahmen, die das deutsche Reichsluftfahrtministerium zwischen 1941 und 1943 in Griechenland anfertigte, barrierefrei zur Verfügung.
Konkret umfasst dies:
- 14.917 Dokumente verschiedenster Materialität
- 14.006 Datensätze mit detaillierten archivischen Beschreibungen

INTRODUCTION
Fondazione 1563 per l’Arte e la Cultura (hereinafter “Fondazione 1563”) has since 2013 supported
research and advanced training in the field of the humanities.
In a wider effort to pursue this goal, in 2020 Fondazione 1563 launched the Turin Humanities
Programme, a research initiative that allows junior scholars to work on interrelated research
projects under the guidance of especially appointed Senior Fellows.
THP aims at promoting two-year research projects about relevant global history topics.
Under THP Fondazione 1563 launched a fourth (2024-26) call for applications for research on
Slavery and Serfdom in Europe and the New World: Debates in the Early Modern Period.
SUMMER SCHOOL 2025 AND ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The Turin Humanities Programme and Fondazione 1563 are pleased to invite doctoral students
and early career researchers to submit their applications to the Summer School Slavery and
Serfdom in Europe and the Americas in the Early Modern Period.
The Summer School aims to explore the modern debates surrounding slavery and serfdom in
Europe and the Americas within the timeframe of the Early Modern period, defined here broadly
as stretching from the sixteenth century to the beginning of the nineteenth.
The project will aim to encourage a comparative perspective, focussing on three key aspects:
1. Early Modern and Enlightenment debates ranging from race and ethnicity to the rights of man.
Debates about enslavement begin with ethical, economic and theological questions, and evolve
in the period towards a greater focus on race, ethnicity and discussion of the rights of man. How
are notions of race debated in the period? Is racial discrimination an underlying cause of
enslavement, or rather a consequence of it? In what ways is slavery essential to early-modern
capitalism and commerce?
2. Serfdom and slavery.
Serfdom existed widely across Europe in the Early Modern period. The challenges relating to
research into serfdom in part mirror the challenges concerning enslavement, yet the two
phenomena are almost always studied separately. To what extent are there parallels between
serfdom and slavery? Are these two phenomena entirely distinct from one another?
3. The role of imaginative literature and the creative arts.
Novels, stories, plays, operas, paintings and prints play an increasingly important role, in the
Enlightenment period in particular, in exploring notions and constructions of otherness, and in
creating often paradoxical fictions of enslavement. Creative works play a crucial part in
communicating these unresolved questions and tensions to a broader public.
The THP 2025 Summer School provides a forum for postgraduate students and early career
researchers in the field of humanities and the social sciences (history, philosophy, literature, art
history, music, anthropology, religion) to engage with the most up-to-date academic debates
on enslavement, serfdom, ethnicity and race in Europe and the Americas in the early modern
period, and to approach these questions from a wide range of methodological approaches.
English will be the default language of the Summer School.
The Summer School programme includes keynote lectures by Demetrius Eudell (Vassar
College, USA), Marisa Fuentes (Rutgers University), Vanessa Massuchetto (Max Planck
Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory), Darrin McMahon (Dartmouth College, USA),
Pärtel Piirimäe (University of Tartu), Ann Thomson (European University Institute, Florence),
Devin Vartija (University of Utrecht), research presentations by the Junior Fellows of the Turin
Humanities Programme, feedback sessions and roundtable discussions.
o foster dialogue between senior and young scholars, the 2025 Summer School offers its
participants a unique opportunity to contribute to the broader discussion on themes of slavery
and serfdom in Europe and the Americas in the Early Modern Period with their own ideas and
research.
Successful applicants will also have the chance to present their papers in panel sessions which
will be followed by a Q&A led by a panel discussant.
HOW TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION
To apply for the Summer School, prospective participants should submit a brief academic CV
(max. 2 pages), an abstract of the research they wish to present (max. 400 words) and a short
essay on why they would like to attend the Summer School (max. 200 words).

The Summer School will be activated only with a minimum of 10 participants; a maximum

COSTS AND FEES
The participation in the Summer School is free to all Italian and International postgraduate
students and early career researchers.
Travelling expenses to and from Torino and accommodation expenses in Torino will be borne by
the participants.
Upon acceptance of the participation in the Summer School, the participants will be asked to
confirm their participation in the social events proposed by Fondazione 1563.

The candidates will be selected based on their resumes and the relevance of their intended
contributions to the general subject of the Summer School.
They will be informed of the result of the selection by early July via the email address they

Successful applicants will receive the attendance form that will have to be signed for
acceptance and returned, on pain of forfeiture, within 5 working days starting from the date
of the communication.
Fondazione 1563 reserves the right to suspend, modify or cancel this selection procedure or the
Summer School in any moment at its incontestable discretion, without that being in any way for

Margarete Bieber-Preis der Archäologischen Gesellschaft zu Berlin 2025
Die Archäologische Gesellschaft zu Berlin schreibt zum achten Mal einen Preis für
Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und Nachwuchswissenschaftler im Bereich der Klassischen
Archäologie und ihrer Nachbardisziplinen aus. Dieser Preis ist nach der bedeutenden
Klassischen Archäologin Margarete Bieber (1879‒1978) benannt.
Margarete Bieber wurde 1907 in Bonn promoviert und war nach der Mathematikerin Emmy
Noether die zweite außerordentliche Professorin in der deutschen Universitätsgeschichte.
1913 wurde sie erstes weibliches Mitglied der Archäologischen Gesellschaft zu Berlin.
Prämiert werden soll ein deutschsprachiger Vortrag, der nicht nur wegweisende wissen-
schaftliche Ergebnisse präsentiert, sondern auch eine interessierte Öffentlichkeit von den
vorgestellten fachlichen Inhalten begeistert. Der Vortrag soll die Relevanz der Archäologie in der
Gegenwart unterstreichen und zugleich dem gesellschaftlichen Interesse an archäologischen
Themen neue und auch unkonventionelle Perspektiven eröffnen. Erwartet wird eine
möglichst anschauliche und lebendige Präsentation des Vortrags.
Der Margarete-Bieber-Preis ist mit 500 Euro dotiert.
