Fixed-Term Stipendiary Lecturership In Classics
Part Time
University of Oxford - Wadham College
The stipend will be on a scale from £27,511 p.a., subject to revision in line with national adjustments to University teachers' salaries.
Wadham College proposes to appoint a 12-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in Classics for the 2021-22 academic year, to cover for a period of leave by the College's Fellow in Classics, Professor Stephen Heyworth; this is a fixed-term contract, based at Wadham College.
The lecturer will be required to give on average twelve hours per week of tutorials for Wadham College during the eight-week term, to engage in advanced research, and to be available during both term and for some periods of the students' vacations to offer organizational, pastoral, and admissions support. The college admits students for all the undergraduate courses in Classics and Ancient History, usually admitting 8 or 9 a year, and aiming to have 32 on course at any one time, the majority taking Classical Mods for the first five terms, followed by Literae Humaniores ('Greats'), and with others studying the joint schools Classics & Modern Languages, Classics & English, Classics & Oriental Studies (as well as Ancient & Modern History and Classical Archaeology & Ancient History).
Key duties include arranging teaching, pastoral care of undergraduate students, setting and marking collections (termly college examinations), attending Tutorial Board meetings, contributing to the College's outreach programme, and taking part in the undergraduate admissions exercise.
The lecturer will be expected to take responsibility for teaching in Greek and Latin language, for the Classical Mods papers Virgil's Aeneid and Texts & Contexts, and for a range of papers in Greek and/or Latin literature from the Final Honour School syllabus, including preferably at least the Latin Literature Core paper, and Ovid. Applicants should indicate which papers they would be in a position to teach.
The successful candidate will have a doctorate in Classics, or will have submitted by 1st September 2021, and must have proven teaching experience relevant to the subject range to be covered. The successful applicant will be asked to provide proof of right to work in the UK in advance of commencing employment in September 2021.
