The Classical World in Context: Religious Experience in Antiquity
A multitude of religions flourished in the Mediterranean and beyond from the second millennium BCE through the Late Roman era. Addressing the diversity of faiths and rituals, scholars will consider the consequences of contact between the Greek and Roman worlds and neighboring civilizations of the Near East, Africa, and transalpine Europe. The intersection of religions entailed continuity and coexistence as well as intolerance and conflict. Conquest, commerce, migration, and the foundation of “international” sanctuaries facilitated new forms of worship. These interactions, which both reflected and shaped religious experience, were widely manifested in art and material culture. Engaging systems of belief that range from state-sponsored religion and local cults to private devotion, researchers will investigate how communities reconciled the spiritually charged and socially fluid landscapes around them.
The Getty Scholars Program at the Villa focuses on the Classical World in Context, a multi-year initiative to explore the interconnectivity between the ancient Mediterranean region and the cultures of Africa and Eurasia. Priority will be given to research projects that apply interdisciplinary, comparative, transregional, and diachronic approaches to art, material culture, literature, and other sources for the study of antiquity.
Applications for 2025–2026 year grants opened on August 1, 2024. The deadline to apply is October 1, 2024 by 5:00 p.m. (PDT).
Applications are welcome from researchers of all nationalities who are working in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.
Applicants who received their degree after September 1, 2021 should apply for a postdoctoral fellowship. Postdoctoral fellowships will not be offered at the Getty Villa in 2025-26, but may be offered for other themes at the Getty Research Institute.
Current Getty staff and members of their immediate family are not eligible for Scholar Grants. Recent recipients who have received a Getty Scholar award within the past six years may be removed from consideration.

Volker Michael Strocka (26.2.1940 – 14.8.2024)
Mit Volker Michael Strocka ist einer der Großen der deutschen Klassischen Archäologie von uns gegangen.
Nach dem Abitur in seiner Geburtsstadt Frankfurt am Main studierte Strocka in München, Basel, Paris und Freiburg. Seine Dissertation bei Walter-Herwig Schuchhardt (1900–1976), wohl einem der besten Kenner griechischer Plastik, galt dem Thema Piräusreliefs und Parthenosschild.
Seine darauf folgende Assistenten-Zeit (1965–1974) verbrachte Strocka am Institut für Klassische Archäologie der damals neu gegründeten Ruhr-Universität Bochum bei Bernard Andreae. Und hier begann er mit dem, was ihn sein Leben lang beschäftigen sollte: der wissenschaftlichen Aufarbeitung römischer Gebäudekomplexe im Mittelmeerraum. Seine erste Station war Ephesos. Hier beteiligte er sich am Wiederaufbau der Celsus-Bibliothek und widmete sich der Wandmalerei in den Hanghäusern, die auch Gegenstand seiner Habilitation wurde (1973).
Ein kurzes, heute fast vergessenes Intermezzo gab Strocka als Dozent an der Universität Göttingen, bevor er 1975 als Erster Direktor des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts nach Berlin berufen wurde. Die Anfänge des zwanzig Jahre währenden Projektes Häuser in Pompeji datieren in diese Zeit.
Von 1981 bis zu seiner Pensionierung im Jahr 2005 leitete Strocka das Institut für Klassische Archäologie der Universität Freiburg, ein knappes Vierteljahrhundert. Damit unterschritt er seinen Lehrer Schuchhardt nur um wenige Jahre.
Die Forschungen zu den Häusern in Pompeji gingen weiter und gipfelten in der Publikation zwölf großformatiger Bände, die zwischen 1984 und 2004 erschienen. Viele damals angehende Kolleginnen und Kollegen bekamen Gelegenheit, an den Arbeiten teilzunehmen, und nicht selten resultierte das Thema ihrer Dissertationen mittelbar oder unmittelbar aus dem Projekt.
Nach dessen Abschluss wandte sich Strocka Nordafrika zu, genauer gesagt der tunesischen Ausgrabungsstätte von Thugga (1996–2000). Das türkische Nysa mit seiner Bibliothek war dann Schauplatz seiner letzten Aktivitäten als Projektleiter (2002–2008).
Schon bald nach seiner Ankunft in Freiburg begann Strocka, die archäologische Abguss-Sammlung nach ihrem jahrelangen Dornröschen-Schlaf wiederzubeleben und kontinuierlich auszubauen, eine Aufgabe, die ihm sehr am Herzen lag. Mit ihr schuf er ein bedeutendes Instrumentarium für die Freiburger Lehre, das in Seminaren, Übungen und Zeichenkursen gern genutzt wurde.
Die Liste seiner wissenschaftlichen Publikationen (https://www.archaeologie.uni-freiburg.de/docs/publlisten/schriftenverzeichnis-strocka-maerz-2018.pdf) füllt zahlreiche Seiten und zeigt seine Bandbreite. Zugleich blieb er bis zuletzt seinen Lieblingsthemen, der antiken Wandmalerei, der Bauornamentik und der Stilkritik griechischer und römischer Plastik, treu.
In den Jahren 1986 bis 1988 übernahm Strocka den Vorsitz des Deutschen Archäologen-Verbandes (DArV). Darüber hinaus wirkte er von 2003 bis 2005 als Erster Vorsitzender der Mommsen-Gesellschaft. Seine damaligen Weggefährten waren Eckard Lefèvre als Zweiter Vorsitzender sowie als weitere Vorstandsmitglieder Martin Dreher, Sabine Föllinger, Claudia Klodt, Uta Kron und Thomas A. Schmitz. Matthias Steinhart und Thomas Ganschow ergänzten das Team als Schriftführer und Kassenführer.
In seinen Vorsitz fällt die erste Kleine Mommsen-Tagung, die 2004 in Bonn stattfand. Erfolgreich warb Strocka unter den in der Gesellschaft unterrepräsentierten Archäologen um neue Mitglieder und setzte sich konsequent für den interdisziplinären Austausch ein. Zwei weitere Amtszeiten (2005–2009) fungierte er als Zweiter Vorsitzender.
Ein Ehrenplatz in der Geschichte der Mommsen-Gesellschaft ist ihm gewiss. Wer ihn kennengelernt hat, wird ihn nicht vergessen.

Stipendiary Research Fellowship on the topic of Rhythm
King’s College Cambridge invites applications for a Research Fellowship from those working on the topic of Rhythm.
Applications are welcome from all those working on this topic within any area of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and who wish to undertake a major project over the course of the four years of this Fellowship. The brief is deliberately wide to encompass innovative thinking about the topic which has distinctive conceptualisations in different research traditions. Creative thinking is encouraged and applicants should not unduly restrict themselves to any single academic discipline nor necessarily focus on a traditionally identified paradigm. The electors to this fellowship are keen to not only encourage applications from fields which the study of rhythm is usually identified, for example music, literature and speech, but also from those who wish to pursue the topic in other domains including for example the rhythm of architecture, art, the economy and life amonst many others.
The ideal candidate for this Research Fellowship will have a strong background in a relevant area of work and be completing or have completed recently an outstanding doctoral thesis. It is not a requirement that the candidate’s doctoral studies or the work that they submit in support of their application should have concerned this topic specifically, but candidates will be expected to show in their applications how their plans for their future work relate to the work that they have already done. The successful candidate will be expected to engage broadly with the whole college community.
It is the aim of King’s Research Fellowships to develop important fields of study that are currently too narrowly restricted in their practitioners and/or their objects of analysis. For this reason, candidates are encouraged to propose creative and innovative projects which will not only make an important contribution to the specific area of interest, but also strengthen the intellectual framework of the humanities as a whole.
The successful candidate will join a lively research community which includes Research Fellows and College Research Associates as well as Fellows who hold University posts. This includes a number of Fellows working in Anthropology, Linguistics, Literature, Music and Psychology which will potentially align with the successful candidate’s project, and a wide range of other subjects which will provide both challenge to and stimulus for novel ways of approaching it. Research Fellows also engage with colleagues from the Collegiate University as a whole in the pursuit of their project.
A Research Fellowship is a postdoctoral position tenable for up to four years. Applications are welcome from graduates of any university. Candidates will usually have completed their PhD or equivalent qualification, but must not have undertaken more than 2 years postdoctoral work or work outside of academia by 1 October 2025 (i.e., an applicants PhD cannot have been granted before 30 September 2023).
Research Fellows are members of the Governing Body, with the full privileges of all Fellows. These include all meals, a degree of financial support for expenses associated with research, and the possibility of an office and accommodation in College properties. Currently, the stipend of a Research Fellow is £24,126 prior to the award of doctorate, or £26,807 after award of doctorate, rising each year to a maximum of £30,912. An accommodation allowance of £3,530 is paid to all Stipendiary Research Fellows, and an additional living-out allowance of up to £4,000, depending on income, is available to those Fellows not living in college-owned accommodation.
In addition to pursuing research, a Research Fellow is required to live in Cambridge or close by and to participate in College life and activity. Although these are research posts, Research Fellows are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to undertake a small amount of University or College teaching, or tutorial duties. Such activity is remunerated separately and can make an important contribution to the development of an academic career. During the course of the Fellowship, a Research Fellow may be granted an intermission for one or two years to take up a temporary position either in Cambridge or elsewhere provided that doing so would be consistent with the Research Fellow’s career development.

Das Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) schreibt für das Akademische Jahr 2025/26 wieder Fellowships für promovierte und habilitierte Wissenschaftlter:innen aller Disziplinen aus.
Das FRIAS ist das internationale Forschungskolleg der Universität Freiburg. Es beherbergt jedes Jahr etwa 40 bis 50 Wissenschaftler:innen aller Nationen und Disziplinen, die sich im Rahmen mehrmonatiger Fellowships voll auf ihre Forschungsprojekte konzentrieren und sich mit Kolleg:innen aus aller Welt vernetzen können. W.H.D. Rouse Junior Research Fellowship

Christ's College invites applications for the W.H.D. Rouse Junior Research Fellowship for work in any of the following subject areas: Classics; Indian languages, including Sanskrit; or Indo-European Philology. It will be tenable for four years from no later than 1 October 2025 and is not renewable.
A Junior Research Fellowship is intended for a researcher early in their career and offers an opportunity to carry out novel research in a stimulating academic environment. A successful applicant is expected to be either a postgraduate student, probably in the latter stages of research leading to a PhD degree (or equivalent), or a post-doctoral researcher who has completed their PhD degree after 1 January 2024.
The stipend for a Junior Research Fellow is currently £27,979 (with a PhD) and £23,700 (without a PhD) and the successful candidate will be afforded the full privileges of a Fellow of the College. Fellows living out of College receive a non-pensionable living-out allowance of £5,022 (with a PhD) or £2,298 (without a PhD).

Postdoctoral Fellowship Stellenbosch and Western Cape
Applications are awaited for a postdoctoral fellowship hosted by the Universities of Stellenbosch and the Western Cape.
Project Title: Responsive Governance and Population Well-being in Late Antiquity
Project Description: Scholarship on Late Antiquity has established that the later Roman Empire employed response mechanisms for more effective and directive governance. How such governance relates to the common good and population well-being is less researched and more difficult to describe. The current collaborative project (Ghent University, Stellenbosch University, University of the Western Cape) aims at investigating the reciprocal relationship between imperial structures and the general populace of the empire. The topic is studied from a top-down perspective (laws, speeches, treatises issued from the top of the social hierarchy) as well as a bottom-up perspective which was communicated to those in executive capacities able to improve the quality of life of lower social strata (petitions, acclamations, the 'common good' implied in ideologies of the ideal state and good rulership, economic and social advances, philosophical notions on happiness, medical ideas of good health, environmental impacts) .

Requirements:
* Ph.D. in Late Antique (Roman Imperial) History and Literature, or a related subject field in Classics (graduation within the last five years).

The Graduate School Scholarship Program (GSSP) of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is offering two (2) doctoral scholarships to earn a PhD within the framework of “Ancient Languages and Texts” doctoral program of the BerGSAS, https://www.berliner-antike-kolleg.org/en/bergsas/index.html
We welcome applications from highly qualified graduates from the fields of:
Ancient History, History of Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages; Ancient Oriental Languages; Ancient Philology: Greek (with Byzantine Greek) and Latin (Classical Latin, Middle and Modern Latin); Egyptology (with Coptology); Iranian Studies; Jewish Studies; Protestant Theology (with Old Testament, New Testament, Church History); Religious Studies; Roman Law.
Applicants must hold an outstanding master's degree (MA, MSt, or MSc) or equivalent in one of the aforementioned disciplines or be very close to completion.
Objectives of the doctoral program “Ancient Languages and Texts”
The program “Ancient Languages and Texts” (ALT), https://www.berliner-antike-kolleg.org/en/bergsas/programme/alt/index.html focuses on the written heritage of ancient cultures which includes literary works as well as documentary texts like inscriptions and papyri. Also, research is carried out into phenomena of mediality such as the interaction between texts and pictorial representations. In this line of inquiry, traditional philological methods are being combined with historical and cultural issues. In addition to that, particular emphasis is placed on theories and approaches of modern literary studies and linguistics. Topics and methods in the digital humanities and computer philology also belong to the program ALT. Thus, the program is characterized by a plurality of research methods and a wide understanding of the concept of ‘a text’. Doctoral researchers are expected to participate in Digital Humanities training offered by BerGSAS. Applicants are be expected to have sufficient command of the relevant ancient languages for their dissertation project.
Who can apply?
- The call is open ONLY to applicants who are not German citizens
- Applicants must not have completed a PhD previously
- The MA degree must not have been completed before March 1, 2019
- Applicants must not have resided in Germany continuously before December 1, 2023
Duration of the scholarship and funding
The doctoral scholarship is available from October 2025 (winter semester 2025/26) for four years, subject to a satisfactory annual progress review. In accordance with DAAD guidelines, the scholarship holders receive a stipend of 1,300 Euros a month, a travel allowance, payments towards health, accident and liability insurance cover, allowances for study and research (and, where applicable, rent and family allowances) as well as financial support for a pre-sessional German language course. Plus, material resources and supervision allowance of 1,000 Euros per year, administered by the BerGSAS.

Applications must be submitted via the BerGSAS portal by 1 November 2024, 00:00 CEWT, quoting the reference 2025-ALT-BerGSAS-GSSP. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

2nd stage
BerGSAS will nominate the candidates selected to the DAAD. The DAAD will make the final decision and will inform you. Please note that admission to doctoral studies and the receipt of a scholarship is subject to assessment by the host university (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, or Freie Universität Berlin) and by the DAAD.

Objectives of the doctoral program “Ancient Objects and Visual Studies”
The doctoral program, https://www.berliner-antike-kolleg.org/bergsas/programme/aovis/index.html
is concerned, among other things, with the effects of images and the mechanisms that make up
communication with images. Key questions are: Who produces images and for whom? What message do
these images convey? What are the elements of meaning (image ciphers) that make up the semantic field
of images? To what extent can images be (or not) precisely determined in their semantic content? Such
questions need to be explored by looking at the archaeological or historical object or artifact in its
respective cultural context. Starting from the individual object, the general cultural influences on the
perception of images should be worked out. Furthermore, the knowledge of the respective functioning of
ancient images and artifacts should be combined with the contemporary possibilities of visual
presentation. International perspectives are highly welcome here, especially those that question both the
European-influenced role of images and the role of the museums.

Das Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (WissZeitVG) setzt bereits in seiner bestehenden Form viele Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, insbesondere in den Geisteswissenschaften, massiv unter Druck. Die Novelle des Gesetzes wird die Situation weiter verschärfen. Mit einem Offenen Brief appellieren Vertreter*innnen aus verschiedenen geisteswissenschaftlichen Fächern an die Politik, das Gesetz grundsätzlich zu überarbeiten und die vielen eingegangenen Stellungnahmen zu berücksichtigen (https://www.bmbf.de/bmbf/de/service/gesetze/gesetze.html im Abschnitt Gesetz über befristete Arbeitsverträge in der Wissenschaft).
