Durham University
Durham University is delighted to invite applications from researchers for Visiting Fellowships of one month in duration.
The aim of the Durham Collections Fellowships is to enable and foster research across the historic collections of Durham, notably Archives and Special Collections at Palace Green Library, the Oriental Museum, the library and archives of Ushaw College (the former Roman Catholic seminary just outside the city), the Cathedral Library and the archives of Durham Priory and Cathedral.
The resources available to scholars include not only libraries and archives, but also collections of visual and material culture, and architectural assets. The purpose of the Visiting Fellowships is to support research into these globally significant collections.
The Barker Visiting Fellowships are intended to support research into any of the collections held in Durham and there are a number of Lendrum Priory Library Fellowships available specifically to support work on the surviving contents of Durham Cathedral's medieval priory library. This collection is currently the focus of a large-scale digitisation project, Durham Priory Library Recreated [http://www.durhampriory.ac.uk<http://www.durhampriory.ac.uk]www.durhampriory.ac.uk<http://www.durhampriory.ac.uk>.
We are also delighted to announce two new fellowship schemes. The Lendrum Fellowships in Book History are open to any applicant wishing to use the historic book collections of Durham. This is interpreted broadly to include consultation of individual books, study of specific collections, research into the material forms of books, histories of book circulation and collecting, plus consideration of the readers of books. We welcome applications from both academic and practitioner researchers at all stages in their career.
The Lord Crewe's Charity Fellowships are open to any applicant wishing to work on the Bamburgh Library Collection. The remit is wide, from those wishing to research it as a collection, to those planning to work on individual items, and also includes the material culture of the books.
Fellows will be encouraged to work collaboratively with academic subject specialists, librarians, archivists and curators to realise the collections' research potential, and to develop innovative research agendas. They will also be encouraged to participate in the life of the University, particularly its broad range of seminar series.
Applications
Applicants should submit a short CV together with a summary of the project and materials they propose to work on, and the expected publications or other outcomes (the summary should be maximum two sides of A4). Applications should demonstrate a serious research interest that focuses on primary source material within the collections held at Durham. Applicants who plan to collaborate with Durham academic or collections staff are especially welcome and should mention this in their application.
Applicants must consult with the relevant collections staff to ensure that the materials they wish to work with are available at the times of their visit. This is particularly important in the case of the Oriental Museum, the Cathedral Library, 5 The College and Ushaw Library, all of which have limited opening hours.
This is especially important for applicants:
* whose research projects may require access to a large number of objects, books or archives
* who are interested in the materiality of collections or items
* who wish to be considered for the Lendrum Fellowships in Book History
* who wish to be considered for the Lord Crewe's Charity Fellowships.
For these areas of research, we strongly recommend that applicants consult relevant collections staff to discuss the practicalities of their research project and their proposed dates of research before applying. If this has not been possible, we may need to ask applicants for further information before assessing their application.
There will be five fellowship intakes throughout the academic year, lasting for four weeks each:
October = 14 October - 8 November 2024
November = 18 November - 13 December 2024
February = 24 February - 21 March 2025
May = 28 April - 23 May 2025
June = 2 June - 27 June 2025
Applicants should indicate their preferred dates. They should also indicate to which university department(s) and/or research centres their research most relates.
Applications should be submitted by noon on Wednesday 24 April 2024. We shall aim to notify successful candidates by the beginning of May 2024.
Fellows will be granted an honorarium of £2,000 per month towards their transport and subsistence costs. A small number of PhD bursaries may be available to the value of £600. Please note that fellows will be expected to arrange their own travel and accommodation.
Recipients of all fellowships are expected to be in continuous residence in Durham and to participate in and make a contribution to the intellectual life of the University. This may include an informal talk, other event or blog post about their research, as part of museum or special collections engagement programmes.
Those who have previously held fellowships are eligible to apply again after three years have elapsed since their previous award. Please note that the maximum times an individual can be awarded a fellowship is on three occasions, or the equivalent of three months, over a period of 10 years.

ERC/UKRI Frontier Research Scholarships: Class Struggle in Ancient Greek Democracy
Information on the ERC/UKRI Frontier Research Scholarships: Class Struggle in Ancient Greek Democracy application process
As a result of the success of the project Class Struggle in Ancient Greek Democracy (ClassDem) in the most recent ERC Consolidator Grant competition, we are pleased to offer two PhD scholarships to be held in the Department of Classics at the University of Edinburgh.
Awards
The award will cover Home or international fees and provide an annual stipend at the standard UKRI rate (the UKRI stipend for the academic year 24/25 has now been published on the UKRI website as £19,237) for three and a half years.
Both PhD positions will be part of the UKRI Frontier Research project, Class Struggle in Ancient Greek Democracy, and supervised by the PI (Prof. Mirko Canevaro) and the core project team (Dr David Lewis and Prof. Douglas Cairns).
The aim of the project is to put class at the centre of the historical reconstruction of Greek democracy - where it belongs. The project contends that class dynamics - grounded in the economic and occupational structures of the Greek cities, and manifesting themselves in the social, political, and cultural oppositions that characterised them - are fundamental for understanding the emergence, nature, and development of Greek democracies. The investigation will cover four main strands: (1) the first strand will investigate the economic underpinnings of class relations in the Greek city-states, with a focus on labour differentiation and labour relations; (2) the second strand will explore the cultural tastes and the social lives of different groups, and how they were structured in opposition to one another; (3) the third strand will tackle how these class oppositions coalesced in distinctive political and institutional preferences; (4) the fourth strand will explore class at the intersection with other axes of social and legal inequality: gender, ethnic origin, slavery.
Eligibility
To be eligible for these scholarships applicants must be able to fulfil the Entry Requirements for the Classics PhD programme at Edinburgh and have the ability to work with ancient Greek sources to an advanced level. Applications must be for the on-campus full-time Classics PhD and not the part-time or PhD by Distance, which are not eligible for funding via these scholarships.
Applications are invited for original PhD projects falling under one (or more) of the project's core foci. Applicants will design their own projects under the general headings of ClassDem and within the project framework. A major element in the remit of the PhDs will be to provide the detailed and well-documented primary research that will underpin the syntheses to be presented in the project's core and summative outputs. Candidates must contact Prof. Canevaro (Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! Zur Anzeige muss JavaScript eingeschaltet sein. <mailto:Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! Zur Anzeige muss JavaScript eingeschaltet sein. >) before applying to discuss ideas for their research projects.
Applying
The application process consist of two steps:
1. Academic (PhD) application
2. Scholarship application
The deadline for both of these applications is 19 April 2024.
Step One: Academic (PhD) application
Completed PhD admission applications must have been made via the University of Edinburgh online application system by the stated deadline.
Please note that the funding applications have their own separate timelines and rules for both the study and the scholarship applications which differ from the deadlines generated automatically by the application portal when submitting your study application. This means that all your supporting documentation (research proposal of 1,000-2,000 words, academic references, copies of qualifications/transcripts) must, where available, also be uploaded by the deadline.
You will need to submit both your undergraduate and postgraduate degree certificates and transcripts in order to be considered for PhD admission. For instructions on how to upload additional documents after you have submitted your application please follow the support guidance available here<https://www.ed.ac.uk/student-systems/support-guidance/applicants/post-online-application-help/document-uploading>.
Pending academic references
If you plan to submit your application on or close to the deadline, please liaise closely with your referees to ensure they supply the required reference within 5 working days after the deadline. If referees cannot upload their references into the application portal by this date, they can send them directly to the PGR Office atDiese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! Incomplete applications will not be considered by the scholarships panel.
Pending degree or English test result
If a degree result or test of English competency is pending we can consider your application and, where appropriate, make you an offer conditional upon supplying these at a later date.
Step Two: Scholarship application
Scholarship applications can be made directly to Prof. Mirko Canevaro (Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt!
