Information for the role of College Associate Professor (Teaching Officer) and Fellowship in Classics
Applications are invited for a Teaching Fellowship in Classics, to be taken up by 1 October 2022. The post will be for three years in the first instance, with the possibility of renewal.
The College Associate Professor will be expected to undertake teaching for the College, leading small group teaching ('supervision') of undergraduates studying Classics (minimum 240 hours per annum), and may be required to assume the role of Director of Studies. The latter role involves the oversight of supervisions for Downing students across the Classics Tripos; advising students on their academic work and monitoring progress; and arranging and participating in the interviewing and assessment of potential undergraduates. The College is particularly keen to attract applicants with expertise in Latin language and literature teaching, especially expertise in the teaching of ab initio Latin (for the prelims course). It is expected that the post holder will be research active.
The appointee will have a flexible approach to their teaching and be able to adjust to the widely differing backgrounds of students on admission. A commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion is essential. The College is involved in outreach work to schools and colleges, and the successful candidate would be expected to be involved in this work.
The post holder will also be elected as a Fellow of the College, with associated benefits (including dining rights, annual research allowance, and access to an office in College) and responsibilities. They will be expected to serve on College committees and to participate fully in College life. The salary will be £37,467.39.
The successful applicant will have completed (or be about to complete) a PhD in a relevant discipline, and will have a strong record of excellence in teaching and a proven research background. This position would suit a person seeking to pursue a career in teaching in further or higher education: it is not an entry-level research post.
In addition to the salary, we offer an attractive benefits package, details of which are available on our website. (Please note that these benefits are non-contractual and may be amended or withdrawn at our discretion.)
