The Department of History within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is seeking to appoint a one year, fixed-term, 0.5 Lecturer in Classical Studies, specialising in Classical history and culture. This is a fixed-term post at 0.5 FTE. The fixed term ends on the 31st of July 2023.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in the relevant field of Classics and experience of teaching in higher education. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively are also essential. A track record of existing or forthcoming publications is a plus.
The successful candidate will work closely, primarily, with Dr Polly Stoker (Programme Leader) and Dr Carey Fleiner. Working within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of History, you will teach modules on Classical history (introductory modules on Greek history), together with courses on fifth-century Athens and Alexander the Great. You may also be required to contribute to modules on public history and historical methodology within the University's current BA and MA programmes and supervise undergraduate dissertations.
Applicants must be able to start on the 1st of September 2022.
It is not anticipated that this post would be extended beyond the initial fixed term.
Main duties and responsibilities
* To undertake undergraduate teaching, module leadership and supervision duties across a range of modules on Classical history and culture (Greek and Roman, incl. epic and drama)
* To contribute, where required, to teaching and supervision duties across the range of the History Department's programmes (incl. historical methodology).
* To supervise dissertations at undergraduate level.
* To undertake moderation and second marking of students' written work.
* To engage with and contribute to the research culture of the Department, Faculty and University.
* To contribute to the administration of the Department and its programmes, including participation in relevant Departmental and Faculty committees and activities.
* To contribute to the promotion of the Department's programmes to both current and prospective students.
* Any other duties as may be reasonably required.

It is anticipated that this job description will change over time in accordance with the needs of the role. The role holder will be fully consulted on any proposed amendments.
All staff are expected to contribute to University administration, course planning, curriculum development, the recruitment of students, engage in research and knowledge transfer and scholarly activities and programme leadership. Additionally, staff are required to participate in relevant staff development activities. The University's courses involve evening and weekend teaching and, where necessary, this will form part of the duties of the post.
