Full time / Fixed Term

£34,304 to £40,927

As one of the UK's leading universities, Durham is an incredible place to define your career while enjoying a high quality work/life balance. We are home to some of the most talented scholars and researchers from around the world who are tackling global issues and making a difference to people's lives.

The Department of Classics and Ancient History is part of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (ranked 19th in the world in the THE 2021 world rankings). The Department of Classics and Ancient History is one of the very best in the UK, and indeed worldwide, with an outstanding reputation for excellence in teaching and research. We were ranked joint second in the last national research evaluation (REF2014) in terms of the quality of our work (by grade point average), and joint first in terms of the quality of our research environment. We attract large numbers of exceptionally talented undergraduate, MA and doctoral students, and we focus on high quality research-led teaching. The department delivers very high levels of overall student satisfaction. In student-facing guides and league tables we are regularly ranked among the top three Classics departments in the UK.

Applications are invited for a Teaching Fellow in Ancient Philosophy. The successful applicant will contribute to the research-led teaching of Ancient Philosophy at all levels, and will also be expected to teach Latin language/ literature modules. Existing modules that might be taught by the successful candidate include: Early Greek Philosophy; Ancient Political Thought in Action; Aristotle's Systems (MA); Beginners' Latin; Advanced Latin. The post involves some teaching in the summer/ Easter period when it is expected that the candidate will take part in outreach activities, including summer schools.

Teaching Fellowships offer the opportunity of valuable experience to those early in their academic careers and the University is keen to maximise the benefit to as many people as possible. The post of Teaching Fellow will involve a significant teaching load, which may extend into the summer period, and there may be related scholarship and the opportunity for administrative duties which relate to education and pedagogy.

The post is for a fixed term only (12 months), and it is not anticipated that the post will be extended beyond this fixed term.

Successful applicants will ideally be in post by 1 September 2022.

The University provides a working and teaching environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate these key principles as part of the assessment process.
