In the Faculty of Arts, a part-time (50%) tenure-track (5 years) lecturer (independent academic staff) position is vacant for research and teaching in the field of Latin language and/or literature (classical period).
Duties
Research
Doing linguistic and/or literary research on Latin of the classical period (in the first case preferably with a focus on literary sources), acquiring research funds on the basis of project applications, all in cooperation (where possible) with the other independent academic staff members of the Faculty of Arts and other research groups and institutions. Research results should not only be published in strictly academic publications, but also communicated to a wider audience.
Education
Teaching in the field of Latin language and/or literature in the broad sense. This teaching assignment will initially involve – in addition to the supervision of bachelor’s papers and master’s theses – the provision of a minimum of 12 credits of the course units listed below:
o Latin Linguistics I (F0WJ9A; 6 ECTS),
o Latin: Proficiency I (F0AM2B; 4 ECTS),
o History of Latin Literature with reading assignment (F0WJ6A; partim = 2 ECTS),
o Historical Texts in Classical Latin B (F0LE7A; 4 ECTS).
Service
Providing scientific, social and internal services; participating in information and recruitment events; and, in time, participating in governance tasks.
To properly complete this assignment, the candidate must be actively present on the Leuven Arts Campus with regularity.
Profile
Candidates are expected to
- Hold the degree of Doctor of Languages and Literatures (or equivalent), with specialisation in Latin language and/or literature.
- Have specialised in the field of the classical period (c. 200 BC - c. 200 AD) or are willing to refocus their research in that direction.
- Have gained sufficient experience in teaching Latin at university level.
- Possess excellent teaching, organisational and contact skills.
- Possess a good command of Dutch at C1 level. The administrative language of KU Leuven is Dutch. If the candidate has no or insufficient command of Dutch upon recruitment, KU Leuven provides a training offer during the tenure track that should allow him/her to participate in board meetings and acquire the required knowledge to teach in Dutch.

To enable scientific integration and research in the first phase, start-up funding of €110,000 is offered.
