Assistant Professorship (non-tenured, fixed-term)
Centre for Urban Network Evolutions (UrbNet), School of Culture and Society, Aarhus University, is looking to recruit a full-time (37 hours/week) assistant professor for the period 1 July 2023 - 31 July 2025.
Place of employment: Nobelparken, Jens Chr. Skous Vej, 8000 Aarhus C. The successful applicant is also expected to spend time at UrbNet's headquarters in Højbjerg.
The position
The successful applicant is expected to contribute to researching and publishing papers related to UrbNet's Palmyra-centred research. Tasks include:
* Taking a lead role in driving and coordinating the centre's cluster of projects focusing on Palmyra, incl. portraiture and circular economy
* Publishing research emerging from the centre's Palmyra-centred projects, both as sole author and co-author
* Assisting the centre director in supervising research assistants and student helpers working on the Palmyra-centred projects and related database activities
* Liaising with relevant project partners and specialists
* Facilitating and co-organising workshops and conferences
* Facilitating processes in connection with funding applications
* Assisting editorial processes
* Reporting to funding agencies
* Teaching as agreed upon with PI and Head of Department
Qualifications
Applicants must be able to document:
* A PhD in classical archaeology or PhD level within classical archaeology.
* In-depth and documented knowledge of the extensive research done on Palmyra through relevant academic publications, incl. as sole author
* Historiographical competences and the ability to work critically with ancient historical, archaeological and antique sources as well as sources from 17th-21st centuries
* The ability to manage joint and collaborate research
* Language skills: English (spoken and written), German (reading), French (reading), Italian (reading), Latin, Ancient Greek, basic knowledge of Semitic languages, and skills within the field of ancient historical sources
* A methodological and structured approach to work
* Good organisational skills and excellent attention to detail
* Flexibility and the ability to prioritise
* Good time-management skills and the ability to meet deadlines
* Good interpersonal and collaborative skills
* Teaching skills
Applicants who can document experience gained in similar roles will have an advantage, but this is not a requirement.
