Associate Professorship (or Professorship) in Latin Language & Literature or Latin and Greek Languages & Literature and Official Studentship in Classics
Christ Church and the Faculty of Classics are seeking to appoint a full time Associate Professor (or Professor) in Latin Language and Literature or Latin and Greek Languages and Literature, to commence from 01 October 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.
This is a joint appointment: the successful candidate will be an Official Student (Fellow) and Tutor in Classics at Christ Church, as well as a being a member of the Faculty of Classics. The role will involve undertaking independent research, undergraduate and graduate teaching, and graduate supervision. It will also encompass administrative and pastoral duties for the College and Faculty. The appointment will be initially for five years at which point, upon completion of a successful review, the post holder will be eligible for reappointment to the retiring age.
The successful candidate will join a thriving and friendly community engaged in work on the ancient world, including the Regius Professor of Greek, Official Students in Ancient Philosophy, Ancient History, and Greek Literature/Papyrology, a Junior Research Fellow in Greek mythology (and currently two other Junior Research Fellows in classical subjects), graduate students in Greek and Latin literature, Ancient History and Ancient Philosophy, and undergraduates in Classics, Classics and Modern Languages, Classics and Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and Classical Archaeology and Ancient History.
Combined salary on a scale from £50,300 to £67,541 per annum, increasing each year to the top of the scale, plus a College Housing Allowance of £18,202 per annum, an Official Studentship Allowance of £3,500 per annum, plus other benefits. An allowance of £2,931 per annum would be made upon award of the title of Full Professor.
Applications are invited from candidates who work in Latin Language and Literature or in Latin and Greek Languages and Literature, with a preference for the following areas of specialisation: Latin and Greek Prose, Greek Drama and Classical Reception. Candidates should hold a doctorate in Classics or a closely-related subject, or be close to completion and will have submitted their thesis before taking up the post; they should be able to demonstrate a high standard of research potential and achievement depending on experience, and the ability to enthuse and inspire students at both undergraduate and graduate level through tutorials, classes, lectures, and supervision.
