Associate Director of the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology
Summary
This position will report to the Director of the Kelsey Museum
The Associate Director will coordinate the collaborative efforts of our multi-disciplinary staff. Facilitating and streamlining the Museum's special exhibition program will be a key component of the job. The Associate Director will also coordinate the development and implementation of all public education, outreach, and community relations programs and services. S/he will act as the Museum's representative over a wide range of University and community constituencies. Together with the Director, and in consultation with curators and staff, the Associate Director will be involved in framing strategic and operational plans consistent with the Museum's place as a unit within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan.
The Associate Director will provide strategic leadership and day-to-day coordination of the operations of the museum. S/he will be the direct administrative supervisor of the Museum's professional staff and will work collaboratively with the academic curators to facilitate their Museum-related projects.
Working closely with the Director, the Associate Director will share significant responsibility for strategic budget decisions. S/he will also work closely with the Kelsey's Office Manager to oversee the budget and to ensure that the Museum is following College and University best practices related to financial and HR management. Along with the Director, s/he will expand foundation and government support for the Museum through proposal writing for external funding as well as collaborative efforts with LSA Development on internally generated fundraising initiatives and activities.
The Associate Director is a regular full-time 12-month position.

The Kelsey Museum of Archaeology is a unit of the University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. It serves as steward of a large collection of art and artifacts from the ancient Mediterranean and Near East, including one of the world's great collections of excavated Graeco-Roman artifacts from Egypt. The Kelsey sponsors ongoing fieldwork and research projects and a lively exhibition program geared both to the general public and to academic audiences. Activities also include an expansive program in public education and outreach, an ever-increasing web presence, and a program of publications serving all facets of our endeavors. The Kelsey's Director and curators hold academic teaching positions within disciplinary departments of the College. Professional staff includes two conservators, two collections managers (registrars), a specialist in outreach teaching, an exhibition designer/preparator, an editor of publications and web sites, a graphic artist, security personnel, and a business office staff serving all these activities. Responsibilities
Oversight of daily museum operations through supervision of professional staff
Management of security policy decisions
Collaboration with Director on major planning, overall management, and museum operations
Participation in major budget decisions in conjunction with the Director
Project management for the Special Exhibition Program
Support grant writing for external funding
Oversight of marketing and development activities in conjunction with LSA Development, Marketing, & Communications partners
Participation in activities related to the Kelsey Museum's profile among national museum organizations
Filling in for the Director as needed
Spearhead the creation of a strategic plan for outreach, representing the Kelsey Museum to its key audiences
Implement and support DEIA principles in museum operations and messaging
Required Qualifications
An advanced degree or equivalent experience in museum management or a museum-related field, as well as relevant research interests. 3-5 years leadership experience in a museum setting and 2-5 years administrative responsibility, including staff supervision and budget management. Demonstrated success in leading and managing people and programs in complex non-profit organizations. A track record of building and maintaining successful relationships with community and government agencies, ability to develop and execute strategic plans, excellent writing and verbal skills, and a history of successful grant applications.
Desired Qualifications
Knowledge of the archaeology of the geographic areas covered by the museum and related fields, as well as relevant research interests.
Additional Information
The salary range for this position is $104,000 to $130,000, please note a higher salary may be offered based on equity and the selected candidate's experience.
