PostDoc position in Greek Papyrology
University of Basel
PostDoc position (80%) in Greek Papyrology
(EGRAPSA - SNSF funded research project)
The Department of Ancient Civilizations of the University of Basel invites applications for one PostDoc position (80%) in Greek Papyrology (1 year, renewable once) to study dated documentary scripts within the new SNSF-funded research project 'EGRAPSA: Retracing the evolutions of handwritings in Greco-Roman Egypt thanks to digital palaeography'
Deadline for application: May 1st, 2023.
Beginning of the position: September 1st, 2023 (ideally).
Workplace: Basel (Switzerland)
The interviews are expected to take place in person in the fourth week of May.
The project
Funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Starting Grant project 'EGRAPSA: Retracing the evolutions of handwritings in Greco-Roman Egypt thanks to digital palaeography' (Basel, 2023-2028) aims at using the recent technological advances in Computer Science to build the big picture of the writing culture of Graeco-Roman Egypt. Starting from sound evidence, it aims at retracing the evolutions of handwriting, generating a model that, in turn, can contribute to organizing the papyrological documentation in a coherent panorama, improving the solidity of dates and writer identifications made on palaeographical grounds. Its scope encompasses the entire papyrological documentation in its complexity, its conceptual approach is to make sense of the plurality of scripts by discerning evolution phenomena and its methodological choice is to measure similarities and explain evolutions with an emphasis on the reconstruction of the dynamics of writing, thus to literally re-trace handwritings.
Your assignments
The advertised Postdoc project will focus on the history and evolutions of documentary scripts. She*he will contribute to set the foundations of a panorama of Greek handwriting and establish sound anchor points for future similarity measurements and analyses of evolution mechanisms. The starting point of the research will be securely dated texts that will have to be characterized (provenance, type, identity and skill of the writer(s), etc.). In a second time, a specific focus will be given to writers, collecting available material on securely identified writers and analyzing their graphical peculiarities.
In addition, the Postdoc will join the team's efforts to reconstruct ancient ductus by taking part in Experimental and Computational Palaeography activities. She*he will help organize - jointly with the team - a number of workshops and conferences, participate in project outreach activities and present her/his research at scientific meetings.
Your profile
Applicants should hold a PhD in Classics or Ancient History (with solid knowledge of the Ancient Greek language), demonstrate a profound competence in Greek documentary papyrology, and have the capacity to handle a great variety of materials in terms of period and content. Previous acquaintance with palaeography will be valued but not required. Applicants should be highly motivated to conduct innovative research, have an excellent command of English and good knowledge of other research languages, and be able to work autonomously within an internationally and institutionally diverse environment.
We offer you
A stimulating research environment at the Department of Ancient Civilizations, housing one of the world's leading research libraries in Classical Studies, a rich library specialized in papyrology and many international collaborations. The Institute of Ancient History hosts the two SNSF-funded projects 'The Roman Egypt Laboratory Climate Change, Societal Transformations, and the Transition to Late Antiquity<https://sustainable-future.unibas.ch/de/forschung/energie-und-klima/projekte/the-roman-egypt-laboratory-climate-change-societal-transformations-and-the-transition-to-late-antiquity/>' and 'Urban Biographies of the Roman and Late Antique Worlds: Antinoopolis and Heracleopolis in Egypt, c. 100 - c. 650 CE'<https://romegyptcities.philhist.unibas.ch/en/> both directed by Prof. Sabine Huebner since 2023. The occupation rate of 80% corresponds to 33.5h/week and requires to leave in Basel or its near vicinity. The salary and the conditions of employment will be those of the University of Basel.
