Job description
The Department of Classics at King's College London seeks to appoint a lecturer specialising in Roman culture up to the 3rd century CE. Applications are sought from candidates with a track record of high-quality interdisciplinary research and teaching in two or more of the following areas: history, literature, and philosophy and thought. Evidence of engagement beyond the traditional confines of Rome and the Mediterranean would be an advantage, in particular Rome's connections to the wider Afro-Eurasian world and/or its reception, fitting with the department's commitment to a broader approach to the past via our new BA in Classics and the Ancient World.
You will teach on our first-year survey modules, 'Introduction to Ancient History (Rome, The Mediterranean and The Middle East to c. AD 600)' and 'Ancient Roman Literature & Thought: An Introduction', while also developing new modules in your area of specialism for second- and third-year students. You will contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of other teaching activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will assume pastoral and administrative responsibilities, have excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative ethos, participating actively in the life and culture of the department. You will conduct and publish high-quality research on Roman culture, seek external research funding and engage in impact-generating activities.
The department is one of the largest, most prestigious and innovative centres for the study of antiquity in the UK. Our scholarship encompasses all aspects of the Graeco-Roman world, including reception and legacy. In REF2021 the department was ranked equal first on the grade point average of our overall quality profile, and, in the recent QS World University Rankings 2022, came 12th globally and 3rd in the UK.
We are committed to a more diverse and inclusive discipline and particularly encourage applications from black and minority ethnic candidates as they are under-represented in the department. All applications from members of groups with protected characteristics that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the Equality Act are welcomed.
This post will be offered on a full-time, indefinite contract.
Key responsibilities
* Deliver team-taught and specialized teaching at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum
* Contribute to postgraduate teaching and supervision
* Contribute to administrative and pastoral provision in the Department of Classics
* Conduct research on Roman culture and supervise doctoral students
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.
Skills, knowledge, and experience
Essential skills
1. PhD completed in Roman culture up to 3rd century CE combining at least two of the following three areas: history, literature, and philosophy and thought

3. Ability to convene, teach and assess undergraduate modules in at least two of the following three areas: history, literature, and philosophy and thought
4. Ability to engage students and support their learning
5. Demonstrable administrative and interpersonal skills, a collaborative ethos, and capacity for team-working
Desirable skills
1. Track record of research in Roman culture and/or its reception beyond the traditional confines of Rome and the Mediterranean, in particular engaging with the broader Afro-Eurasian context,
2. Ability to teach modules on Latin texts (poetry and/or prose) in the original
3. Enthusiasm for collaborating with external partners whether in London or beyond
4. Experience of teaching and supporting students at postgraduate level
