Four-year PhD position, The history of toleration in Antiquity
As part of the collaborative research project 'Religious difference and deviance: re-appraising toleration in Greco-Roman Antiquity' (FWO Senior Research Project), the Departments of History of Ghent University and the University of Groningen offer one fully funded four-year PhD studentship. The project proposes to study practices of, attitudes towards, and justifications of tolerance and intolerance in the ancient world through a series of case studies. The aim is to generate a more nuanced image of how Greek and Roman societies dealt with religious difference.
Your profile:
You possess a good master's degree in a relevant discipline (or will possess one by 1/1/2024) and an excellent knowledge of Greek and/or Latin. You have an interest in ancient history and literature, and the history of religion. You are able to work independently, whilst also being a team player.
Your tasks include: completion of a PhD within four years, the co-organisation of a conference, limited amounts of teaching, and assistance with other research carried out in the project.
Our offer:
You will be based for three years in Ghent and one year in Groningen, and this four-year position will lead to a joint degree from both universities. We offer you the opportunity to work as part of two high-quality and large groups of scholars working on ancient history and literature in Ghent and Groningen, a competitive full scholarship, full health insurance, further training through OIKOS, the Dutch Research School in Classics, and the possibility to spend a semester abroad (depending on additional funding).
The successful candidate is expected to start ideally on 1/10/2023 (and 1/1/2024 at the latest). S/he is expected to reside in Belgium (and the Netherlands, during the year in Groningen).
A full project description can be obtained from Dr Rebecca Van Hove<https://www.rug.nl/staff/r.van.hove/> (Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! Applications, consisting of a CV, personal statement (max 1 p.), the names of two referees, and a copy of your MA thesis or a substantial article, should be submitted to both e-mail addresses before 1 July 2023.
Interviews will be held in the first week of July.
