Project
The KU Leuven research project studies the phenomenon of classical bilingualism in Erasmus' (ca. 1469-1536) works and networks. Classical bilingualism involves the competence of actively speaking and writing both Classical Latin and Ancient Greek. This project argues that the great age of written classical bilingualism should be situated in the so-called Renaissance rather than in antiquity. To this end, it compares Erasmus' classical bilingualism with that of Cicero, using digital tools and conducting an analysis on a micro- and macrolevel. This comparison requires the creation of a corpus with full-texts of Erasmus' works, which the PhD student will help creating. The project will also compare Erasmus' ideas on Latin-Greek code-switching with his actual practices: this will be the main subject of the present PhD research project.
Profile
The successful candidate:
* holds an MA in Classics;
* has documented experience with Renaissance and Neo-Latin studies, the history of linguistics, and/or historical sociolinguistics;
* has an interest in expanding their expertise to include digital and computational approaches;
* has an excellent oral and written command of English, the main working language of the project;
* is willing and able to work both independently and as part of a broader research team.
Offer
The position is for 4 years.
The successful candidate will:
* receive a generous scholarship (barema 43);
* enjoy academic guidance by the PI;
* be integrated into an attractive and diverse research environment, with people from various backgrounds, in different career stages and with different kinds of expertise;

* be able to further build their expertise by participating in specialized masterclasses organized in the frame of the supervisor's various projects;
* have the opportunity to contribute to teaching in the Latin language and literature curriculum.
