The School of History, Archaeology and Religion is seeking to recruit a new Research Associate in Roman Archaeology to join our dynamic and forward-looking team. Archaeology has been taught and researched at Cardiff for over 100 years and the School continues to lead developments in archaeological science, theory and method.
You will join the research project 'Feeding the Roman Army in Britain' (FRAB, PI Dr Richard Madgwick) funded by the Leverhulme Trust. FRAB employs an ambitious multi-isotope programme to examine the logistics of Roman military supply and to address the army's impact in frontier provinces. Focusing on fauna from forts and rural settlements in three frontier zones the project is addressing reveal animal origins, supply networks and husbandry strategies for resourcing the army.
The role will entail desk-based collation of archaeological datasets and integration with the scientific datasets produced as part of the project, in collaboration with the project team. Contributing to and, in some instances coordinating, the project's outputs will also form a major part of the role.
You will have expertise in the Roman archaeology, preferably with experience of military archaeology and artefacts in Britain. You should have a PhD in a relevant subject area (or equivalent research experience) and have experience with secondary archaeological data. Applicants should also have excellent communication and IT skills, to include the ability to present complex and specialist professional concepts clearly and confidently to others, using high-level skills and a range of media.
You will join our lively and dynamic School which is internationally recognised for its research and teaching. Appointments will always be made on merit.
This is a full-time post, fixed term until 3 January 2025.
