Latinist

The Department of Classics at the University of Virginia is pleased to announce a search for a Latinist to fill the Basil L. Gildersleeve Chair of Classics. The anticipated starting date is August 10, 2026. We are seeking to maintain and enhance the academic excellence of the Classics Department by the appointment of a scholar with internationally recognized expertise. Any field of ancient Latin literature will be considered. The Department prides itself on its collegial atmosphere and its robust Graduate and Undergraduate Programs. In addition to research the new colleague will teach graduate students and undergraduates at all levels (two courses per semester), will share in the leadership of the Department, and will contribute to the Department's collaborations within the larger academic community of the University. The appointment will be made at the level of Full Professor, but applicants now at the rank of Associate Professor with exceptional records of scholarship and teaching will be considered.
To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, applicants must hold a PhD in Classics.
