PhD Position at York University (Toronto) in the History of Authoritarian Politics in Ancient Rome

Applications are invited for a PhD position at York University (Toronto) in the history of authoritarian politics in ancient Rome. The position will begin in Fall 2026 and is attached to the project 'The Politics of Repression in Ancient Rome: Discourses and Practices', which is supported by a five-year Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Insight Grant, directed by Benjamin Kelly. The successful applicant will assist with the project, while also serving as a Tutorial Assistant (TA) and writing a PhD dissertation on some aspect of authoritarian politics in ancient Rome. Both international and domestic students are eligible for the position.
The successful candidate will receive a competitive offer of funding that is guaranteed for years 1-5, details of which can be found here: https://www.yorku.ca/gradstudies/students/current-students/graduate-funding/funding-at-york/york-graduate-fellowship/ . In addition to the regular funding package, the student will also receive CAD$8000 per year for Years 1-4 to work as a Research Assistant on the project described above. All PhD students are also eligible to apply for a variety of additional internal and government scholarships to cover living and research expenses.
The successful applicant will hold a Master's degree in Classics, Classical Studies, or Ancient History. Substantial prior training in Ancient Greek and Latin is required, and candidates with a reading knowledge of at least one other modern scholarly language aside from English will be preferred. Courses are available at York to allow PhD students to acquire a reading knowledge of the additional modern languages they will need for their research.
