About us
The Department of Greek and Latin at UCL is looking to appoint a full-time Lecturer in ancient philosophy.
The successful applicant will be expected to maintain and enhance the academic standing of UCL, to advance the discipline by carrying out and publishing research in their area of specialization, to lecture and tutor students to a high academic standard in classical philosophy as well as Greek and Latin language and literature, and to take on administrative duties as required by the Head of Department. There is a preference for candidates with research interests at the intersection of classical philosophy and literature and/or culture.

About the role

Main purpose of the job

  *   Carry out and publish high-quality, world-class research that reinforces and complements existing Departmental and Faculty activities
  *   Support undergraduate, MA, and PhD students and postdoctoral scholars
  *   Contribute to teaching existing or new modules in the areas relevant to the post
  *   Participate in Departmental administrative, outreach, and enterprise activities
  *   Carry out any other duties within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager.

Duties and responsibilities

  *   To advance knowledge by conducting research and other original work and publishing the results individually or in collaboration with others.
  *   To provide lectures, seminars, classes and advisory services for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  *   To create new course material where necessary.
  *   To tutor undergraduate students and to supervise postgraduate students.
  *   To examine students, including students of other institutions when necessary.
  *   To assist in the recruitment and selection of students.
  *   To undertake administrative duties as required.
  *   To take responsibility to carry out duties in a way that embodies UCL’s environmental and social sustainability values, actively supporting UCL’s Sustainability Strategy, policies and objectives within the remit of their role.
  *   To maintain an awareness and observation of fire and health and safety regulations.
  *   To perform such other duties as may from time to time be required by the Head of Department.

About you
You should have completed a PhD in a relevant area and have the ability to teach students to a high academic standard. In addition to this, you should have excellent communication skills, be able to work well independently and as part of a team and be flexible and responsive, particularly to the changing education environment.
