Confirmed speakers:

Lauren Ginsberg (Duke University), Alain M. Gowing (University of Washington), Leanne Jansen (Leiden University), Robert Kirstein (University of Tübingen), Damien Nelis (University of Geneva), Nandini Pandey (Johns Hopkins University), Lene Rubinstein (Royal Holloway, University of London)

Workshop topic:

The aim of this workshop is to discuss the relationship of power and forgetting and the ways in which it is represented in Greek and Latin texts: how does power shape the memory (understood as the result of processes of remembering and forgetting) of the text and its readers? Which literary techniques support forgetting rather than remembering? How do texts depict processes of forgetting and how do they themselves become part and instrument of processes of forgetting?

Both ancient (Cic. Tusc. 3.35) and modern theorists often assume that to forget something on purpose and to make someone forget something is impossible. There are, however, traces in Greek and Latin literature which suggest otherwise: ancient authors do not only depict processes of active forgetting, they also attempt to manufacture and organize the forgetting of people, events, things and even interpretations – both on an individual and on a collective level. This workshop will examine how the exercise of forgetting is coincident with the expression of power (e.g. political power, religious power, rhetorical power, erotic or emotional power).

Topics of papers may include (but are not limited to):

  • forgetting as a narrative, intertextual, or poetic element in, e.g., drama, epic, novel
  • organized forgetting, canonization processes, and the selection of knowledge in technical literature
  • the role of forgetting in reception processes (or classicism)
  • positive and useful forms of forgetting, e.g., in consolation literature
  • philosophical theories about forgetting

Since most of our invited speakers are Latinists, we are very (though not exclusively) interested in papers on Greek literature.
