      The School of History, Classics and Archaeology at Newcastle University is currently recruiting a fully funded PhD student to work on the following project:

       

      Edition of unpublished Greek documents from the Papyrus Collection of the Austrian National Library

       

      Project summary

      This project focuses on the decipherment, translation and commentary of a group of hitherto unpublished Greek texts written on papyrus from Egypt, housed at the Austrian National Library. Dated to the Ptolemaic and Roman periods (III BC-AD IV), the texts concern the socio-economic life of a number of Egyptian communities. The aim of this project is twofold: first, to make accessible to scholars, for the first time, new documents, which can be used for further study; second, to get an insight into the lives of the lower strata of society for Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt, and for antiquity more broadly.

       

      This is a Collaborative Doctoral Award (Staff-led), funded by the Northern Bridge Consortium, in collaboration with the Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften (Austrian Academy of Sciences) and the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek (Austrian National Library) in Vienna.

      The successful candidate will be based in Newcastle but will spend two six-month periods in Vienna, one at the end of Year 1 and another at the end of Year 2.

      Tuition fees

      • A minimum stipend per year for living costs, which is paid in regular instalments. Awards increase every year, typically with inflation. As an indicator, the level for 2023/2024 is £18,622. CDA award-holders will receive an additional £600 per annum to help fund collaboration with the non-HE partner (for travel, accommodation, etc.).
      • Award-holders are eligible to apply to a fund reserved to support primary research costs to include, for example, conference attendance, fieldwork, language training, overseas research visits and placements with a non-academic partner. 
      • Please note award-holders will not have a personal research account on which to draw.
      • The duration of the award is 3.5 years.
      • Tuition fees paid at a rate equivalent to the Home UK fee.
      • For international students: We are still waiting to hear whether the Northern Bridge Consortium will cover the difference between the Home and International tuition fee rate, but applicants will be informed by mid-December 2023 at the latest.

      DOKTORANDENSTIPENDIUM
      Die finanzielle Unterstützung der Gerda-Henkel-Stiftung und der Elise-und-Annemarie-Jacobi-Stiftung ermöglicht es der Kommission für Alte Geschichte und Epigraphik, dem Testament von Frau Annemarie Jacobi entsprechend, Studierende aus aller Welt von "außerordentlicher Begabung und beschränkter finanzieller Bewegungsfreiheit" bei ihrer Promotion im Fach Alte Geschichte und eng verwandter Fächer zu fördern. Neben der im deutschsprachigen Raum üblichen Dissertation gelten entsprechend qualifizierende Arbeiten gemäß den Normen der jeweiligen Heimat- oder Studienländer der Bewerberinnen und Bewerber (PhD, Thèse Nou-
      veau Régime, tesi di dottorato etc.) ebenfalls als förderungsfähig. Auch die Arbeit an der Publikation einer Dissertation ist förderungsfähig, wenn zum Zeitpunkt der Antragstellung der Dissertationstermin nicht länger als sechs Monate zurückliegt.
      Die Kommission schreibt deshalb für deutsche und internationale Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden regelmäßig Stipendien an ihrer hervorragend ausgestatteten althistorischen Fachbibliothek aus. Beantragt werden können Stipendien mit einer Dauer von 3 Monaten (den Quartalen des Jahres entsprechend). Geboten werden ein Arbeitsplatz in der Kommissionsbibliothek, eine kostenlose Unterkunft in einem voll ausgestatteten Apartment
      im Gebäude, die Übernahme der nachgewiesenen An- und Abreisekosten bis zu einem Höchstbetrag von EUR 350 (Europa) beziehungsweise EUR 900 (Übersee) sowie ein Zuschuss zum Lebensunterhalt von monatlich EUR 600. Für die Dauer der Corona-Epidemie, der sich daraus ergebenden Reiserestriktionen und Quarantänevorschriften ist die Präsenzpflicht von den länderspezifischen Rahmenbedingungen abhängig.

      Die Kommission für Alte Geschichte und Epigraphik des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts betreibt und fördert Forschungen im Bereich der Alten Geschichte, im Besonderen auf den Gebieten der griechischen und lateinischen Epigraphik, der Numismatik, der Papyrologie und der historischen Topographie.       Die numismatische Kommission der Länder in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (NK) unter-
      stützt erneut den TAG DER ANTIKEN NUMISMATIK, indem sie mehrere Reiskostenbeihilfen
      finanziert.
      In den letzten Jahren hat sich TAG DER ANTIKEN NUMISMATIK mit seiner Intention, etablierte
      Forscherinnen und Forscher, Sammelnde und Nachwuchskräfte zusammenzubringen, in der
      numismatischen Welt etabliert. Immer mehr Studierende sowie Nachwuchswissenschaft-
      lerinnen & Nachwuchswissenschaftler reisen nach Münster, um an der Veranstaltung (auch
      ohne eigenen Beitrag) teilzunehmen und die freundlich-kollegiale Atmosphäre zum Kennen-
      lernen von Fach und Personen zu nutzen.
      Um den Nachwuchs zu einer solchen Kontaktaufnahme zu ermuntern, stellt die Numismatische
      Kommission der Länder erneut Reiskostenbeihilfen in Höhe von jeweils 150,- Euro zur
      Verfügung.

      1 Startstipendium des Doktoratsprogramms Altertumswissenschaften der Universität Basel

      Das Doktoratsprogramm Altertumswissenschaften der Universität Basel schreibt ein einjähriges Startstipendium à CHF 30‘000 aus (in zwei Tranchen mit Evaluation). Der Antritt des Stipendiums erfolgt zum 01.04.2024.

      Ihre Aufgaben: Die Stipendien dienen der Unterstützung während der Startphase des Doktorats. Im ersten halben Jahr müssen die StipendiatInnen einen Förderantrag ausarbeiten, um sich beim Schweizerischen Nationalfonds oder einer anderen Förderinstitution für die Weiterfinanzierung ihres Promotionsprojektes zu bewerben.

      Ihr Profil: Erwartet werden eine hohe Motivation sich im Rahmen des Doktoratsprogramms zu engagieren sowie die Immatrikulation an der Universität Basel.       Scholarships "The Poetics of Social Change in Late Antiquity "

      We invite applications for a second, fully funded PhD as part of the project 'The Poetics of Social Change in Late Antiquity (250-750AD)'. This project investigates how classical Latin poetry was read and responded to in late antiquity (c. 250 - 750 AD). It is co-led by Paul Roche and Anne Rogerson at the University of Sydney.

      We invite proposals for PhD projects that address any of the following:

      *       The reception of classical Latin poetry in the Latin poetry of late antiquity

      *       The writing of a full-scale literary commentary on a late Latin poetic text

      *       The study of a particular classical author's influence across a group of related texts, throughout a specific period, or across the breadth of late antiquity.

      *       The continuities and transformations of classical genres of poetry in late antiquity

      *       The reimagining of republican and early imperial Rome in the poetic texts of late antiquity

      *       The study of the critique of classical Latin poetry or poets, including their imagined lives and careers, in the literature of late antiquity more generally


      The supervisory team, Associate Professor Paul Roche and Dr Anne Rogerson, has won an Australian Research Council Discovery Project grant: 'The Vandal Renaissance: Latin Literature in Post-Roman Africa (435-534CE)'. They have significant experience in supervising students working in late antique receptions of Latin poetry, and in assisting early career researchers to develop publications and their academic profile. If the successful candidate's project focusses on the Latin poetry of Vandal North Africa, there is scope for their project to be included within the ARC Discovery Project. The successful candidate would have access to the resources of the Centre for Classical and Near Eastern Studies of Australia.


      The applicant approved for this project will be considered for a number of merit-based scholarships that fully support their PhD for a period of up to 3.5 years. These scholarships would provide a stipend allowance of $35,629AUD per annum. Successful international students will also receive a tuition fee scholarship for up to 3.5 years.

      Portuguese Higher Education Institutions (HEI) wishing to receive visiting professors from foreign universities, with a scientific curriculum of high merit and with notorious recognition in the area of the Humanities, for the development of academic activities in Portugal.

      The Professor who will be responsible for coordinating the visit, representing the proposing Portuguese HEI.

      The Centre for Classical and Humanistic Studies is open to expressions of interest from foreign professors in the areas in which professors from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra teach courses and simultaneously carry out research: Classical Studies; Heritage, History and Cultures of Food; Philosophy; Music Studies.

      Visiting period:
      Grants are awarded directly to Visiting Professors for visits of a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 9 months. The visit must begin no later than 12 months after confirmation of selection.

      Submission of applications:
      Applications must be made on behalf of the Portuguese HEI, by the Professor who will be responsible for coordinating the visit.

      a) Name of the Professor from the Portuguese HEI responsible for the visit;

      d) Letter of commitment from the visiting professor;
      e) Provisional dates of the visit;
      f) A brief description of the visiting professor's academic merit, which contributes to their recognition and status as a leader in their field (200 words);
      g) A brief description of how the proposed visit can contribute to the competencies of the Portuguese institution (200 words);
      h) A list of the activities planned to be carried out by the visiting professor, which should include at least one seminar, one course or one intensive course.

      The results will be communicated to applicants no later than 90 days after the close of applications, via the MyGulbenkian platform.

      Selection criteria:
      a) academic merit of the visitor's research and/or teaching;
      b) potential to make a substantial contribution to the competencies of the Portuguese institution;
      c) specificity and systematization of the program proposed for the visit.

      Collaborative research alone is not a selection factor. Emphasis should be placed on the dissemination and sharing of skills and knowledge that will be valuable to the host institution.

      Junior Research Fellowships

      Magdalen College Oxford

      The College proposes to elect up to four Fellows by Examination (elsewhere known as Junior Research Fellows (JRFs)) in 2024. The successful candidates will already have demonstrated outstanding promise in their research.

      Each Fellowship is tenable for three years at a stipend currently starting at £26,131 per annum, subject to an annual cost of living award. In addition, partnered accommodation will be provided in College free of charge (tax liabilities will apply) or, alternatively, a taxable housing allowance currently set at £16,560 per annum. During the first two years of appointment, the Fellow is a member of the Governing Body of the College and for all three years of appointment is entitled to free lunches and dinners in College and a research allowance. Fellows by Examination are expected to live in the Oxford area, and their research base must be in Oxford. Fellows by Examination can benefit from flexible working conditions.

      Applications are encouraged from candidates from all countries and all universities.       Two Research Fellows in Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

      Gonville & Caius College intends to elect two Research Fellows in Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences in 2024. Candidates should be graduate students or post-doctoral researchers who will either be in their final year of doctoral research or not more advanced than one year since the first submission of their PhD. Research Fellowships are awarded to individuals with an exceptionally strong academic record who have produced innovative doctoral research in any branch of the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

      The Fellowships will be tenable for four years from 1 October 2024. Research Fellows have the full entitlement of Fellows; they are expected to spend the tenure of their Fellowship in Cambridge and to contribute to the life of the College. Permission may be granted for periods of research away from Cambridge.

      A Research Fellowship at Caius is compatible with a simultaneous appointment to a salaried post-doctoral position in a Cambridge Department or Faculty. Such a person appointed to a Research Fellowship would be entitled to all the benefits of a Research Fellow other than stipend. If the post-doctoral position comes to an end before the end of the four-year Fellowship, the College's usual stipend will apply for the remainder of the time.

      The current stipend offered is either (a) £25,964, rising by three annual increments to £28,884 if living in College accommodation as a single person, which is free, or in College couples' or family accommodation, if available, which is subsidised, or (b) £29,161 rising by 3 annual increments to £32,081 if not living in College accommodation. All stipends are subject to an annual cost of living review each October. Other benefits include 10 free meals per week and certain research expenses may be reimbursed. There are also opportunities for College teaching (up to six hours per week), which attracts extra payment.

      Candidates must submit written work for assessment amounting to a minimum of 20,000 words at the same time as their application. Apart from quotations, the work must be in English. If a complete PhD and/or published work is submitted, the applicant should indicate which parts are the most important. A maximum of 30,000 words will be assessed.

      Applications open on Friday 1 September 2023 and must be completed by Monday 2 October 2023. Shortlisting will take place on Monday 8 January 2024. Those selected will be invited for interview on Friday 12 January 2024, so candidates should ensure that they will be available for interview on that day, if required. Offers will be made shortly after the interviews and must be accepted by 4.00 pm on Wednesday 17 January 2024 at the latest.

      Die  Berlin Graduate School of Ancient Studies (BerGSAS) schreibt 4  Stipendien (predoc) mit Beginn zum 1. Januar 2024 oder zum 1. Juli 2024  aus. Die Ausschreibung umfasst alle fünf Promotionsprogramme der  BerGSAS. Der Bewerbungszeitraum endet am 1. November 2023.
