Dear all,
Please find below information and links concerning three doctoral fellowships in Ancient History, Classical Philology, and Biblical Studies as part of the project STASTA (STAtes of STAndardization) at the University of Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve).
The collaborative project STASTA aims to be the first comparative and diachronic study of the relationship between the standardisation of market tools (weights, measures, coinage), and interrelated developments in literary culture, politics, and religious ideology in the Greco-Roman world from the 4th century BCE to the 4th century CE. The major hypothesis of STASTA is that the standardisation of market tools, ubiquitous in ancient lived environments, played a major role in, and can be seen reflected in, developments in culture, politics, and literature of the period. In part, STASTA aims to assess the extent to which standardisation of market tools is a way by which populations (often heterogeneous) are made more "legible" to the state (Scott 1998)-and sometimes aim to disrupt such legibility.
While this project is essentially comparative and collaborative, reaching across linguistic, regional, chronological, and disciplinary boundaries, it includes three specific corpora, each the province of a doctoral project by the four STASTA promoters:
According to UCLouvain doctoral regulations, the thesis must be completed in four years on a full-time basis. Within the STASTA project, the first two years of funding are guaranteed. Funding may be renewed for a further two years if the successful candidate fulfils the conditions set out in the doctoral regulations (passing the confirmation test) and if the funding sources are renewed.
Consortium: prof. Charles Doyen, prof. Geert Van Oyen, prof. Aaron Kachuck, prof. Matthieu Richelle.
For a fuller description of the posts, please see below; for details on applying, please use the links.
Yours very truly,
Aaron Kachuck

Doctoral fellowship (full-time; 24 months, renewable once) in Greek History (UCLouvain, Belgium)
Application deadline: May 15, 2022
Tasks and duties: Completion of a doctoral dissertation involving doctoral training, research stays abroad, participation in team seminars, participation in the organisation of an international conference.
Project description: This doctoral dissertation is part of the STASTA project, which aims to study comparatively and diachronically the relationship between the standardisation of market tools (weights, measures, coinage), and interrelated developments in literary culture, politics, and religious ideology in the Greco-Roman world from the 4th century BCE to the 4th century CE. More specifically, the doctoral dissertation will study the rich and diverse corpus of documentation concerning the agoranomoi (800+ stone inscriptions; 300+ mentions on Greek weights; 250+ attestations in Classical literature). The study of this corpus aims to reconstruct the establishment of a metrological system, in its legal and administrative dimensions, by retracing the legislative process of creating metrological standards and defining prototypes, and by studying the functions and social representations of magistrates in charge of controlling weights and measures in a commercial context. The dissertation may be written in either English or in French.
Profile: The successful candidate will hold a Master's degree in Ancient History, Classical Archaeology or Classical Philology at the time of taking up the position. A good knowledge of ancient Greek and Latin is required. An excellent command of English or French (level C2) and a good command of the second language (level B2) are required. Fluency in another language is an additional asset.
Additional information: The selected candidate must be admitted to, then inscribed within, the doctoral program at the University of Louvain (Louvain-la-Neuve), within the Doctoral Commission of "History, history of art and archaeology" (CDD4). The selected candidate will receive a tax-free scholarship (with social security contributions, but without professional deductions).
Starting date: October 1st, 2023
Documents required: CV with a cover letter, a letter of recommendation, copies of diplomas and/or transcripts.

Doctoral fellowship (full-time; 24 months, renewable once) in Latin Literature (UCLouvain, Belgium).
More specifically, the doctoral dissertation will study how market tools-as symbols of authority whose centralisation and standardisation are always also sites of contention-served also as tools for thought for authors of Latin literature from the Republic to the Empire, with a focus on literature of the age of Augustus, when the standardisation of coinage took hold, the dream of standardising weights and measures across the empire began to put out roots. What can Latin literature tell us about states of standardisation in the early Roman empire? What, in turn, can states of standardisation tell us about literature-its metaphors, its structures, its goals? Concretely, this dissertation will focus on Latin textual archives (especially, but not exclusively, poetic) of the 1st centuries BCE and CE to study and compile the wide diffusion of market tools as terms, objects, and as metaphors; as key details or major themes in textual archives; and as aspects in the ideological construction of, or opposition to, new forms of political culture. The resulting dissertation will contribute principally to ancient literary studies, but also to the social, political, and cultural history of antiquity. The dissertation may be written in either English or in French.
Profile: The successful candidate will hold a Master's degree in Classical Philology (or equivalent) at the time of taking up the position; for questions concerning the equivalence of different degrees, please feel free to be in touch with the promotor (Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! A good knowledge of Latin is required, and a good knowledge of ancient Greek would be an additional asset. An excellent command of English or French (level C2) and a good command of the second language (level B2) are required. Fluency in another language (ancient or modern) is an additional asset.

Ghent University
Departments of Linguistics, Literary Studies, and History
The Ghent University Departments of Linguistics, Literary Studies, and History are hiring
2 doctoral researchers for the GOA-project "Interconnected texts. A graph-based computational approach to Byzantine paratexts as nodes between textual transmission and cultural and linguistic developments"
Description of the research project
The research team of the GOA (Concerted Research Action) project "Interconnected texts" at Ghent University is inviting applications for two PhD fellowships. The project is based upon the corpus of Byzantine book epigrams available at https://www.dbbe.ugent.be/. It aims to investigate book epigrams as texts at the threshold between the material and the textual, with a focus on their formulaic nature, and to explore the possibilities of innovative technologies to pursue multifaceted humanities research. The project brings together linguistic, literary, historical and computational experts.
Description of the research positions
PhD Fellowship 1: Linguistics
The first PhD candidate will be embedded within the work package 'Linguistics', the main aim of which is to better understand formulaic phraseology in the DBBE corpus. More specifically, the PhD candidate will study the different types of formulaic patterns that occur in the corpus, create a typology of the deviations of standard patterns that can be found, and situate the use of formulae in its broader literary and socio-cultural context, making a comparison with other Byzantine and/or Ancient Greek corpora. In order to answer these research questions, the PhD candidate will apply insights from linguistic disciplines such as historical sociolinguistics and cognitive linguistics - under the guidance of the main supervisor, Klaas Bentein - and work closely together with other PhD students and team members who are applying digital methods to the corpus and its metadata (natural language processing, graph-based data exploitation and analysis). The research is expected to lead to a PhD thesis, either in the form of a monograph or a collection of single- or co-authored articles and chapters. Next to the PhD thesis, the candidate will be expected to engage in a limited amount of teaching and dissemination activities that are connected to the research.
PhD Fellowship 2: Manuscript culture
This PhD candidate will be engaged in the Work Package 'Manuscript Culture'. This WP will investigate the multiple connections that book epigrams establish between the material production of texts and their intellectual, spiritual and/or social significance in Byzantine society. Research questions involve various reading strategies that book epigrams propose for specific texts, as well as discourses of community building present in these epigrams. The research is situated at the intersection of Byzantine Studies, Palaeography and Manuscript Studies, and Digital Humanities.
The PhD student will perform research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation on a specific innovative theme within this general framework. The dissertation will be supervised by Floris Bernard (Medieval Greek literature) and Els De Paermentier (Medieval history and manuscript studies). The candidate will make extensive use of the Database of Byzantine Book Epigrams, working closely together with the other members of the research team. The student will regularly exchange intermediary results and help evaluate the computational tools developed within the project. The candidate will disseminate the research results in (partly co-authored) publications, implement the research in (limited) teaching duties, and create public awareness of the Greek manuscript heritage.
