CUSHIONS, PADDINGS AND UPHOLSTERY IN ANTIQUITY
GERMAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL INSTITUTE ROME
10./11.10.2024
IN ROME
CALL FOR PAPERS
Deadline: 15.07.2024
The aim of our workshop is to shed light on a
subject that is still largely unexplored: Cushions,
paddings and upholstery, integral to both
transport and the home. From trade practices
and connections to representational habits and
glimpes into the daily life, they can provide
insights into a wide range of topics.
During the workshop we want to encourage an
interdisciplinary approach, start building a
network and discuss questions such as:
How can we best detect, document, analyse
and preserve traces of cushions, paddings
and upholstery in archaeological contexts?
What sources do we have other than the
material remains and how can we interpret
them?
How should archaeological and historical
research be organised in order to explore
the full potential of this class of textiles?
TERMS OF APPLICATION
We are looking for early career researchers
who would like to present their work on
cushions, padding and upholstery in Antiquity in
the fields of archaeology, ancient history and
philology at our workshop.
If you want to present your project, we look
forword to your application, containing an
abstract (500 words) and a short CV (max. 2
pages).

German. Each participant is kindly asked to
