A cooperation between the Archaeological Institute (Prof. Dr. Michael Heinzelmann,
Classical Archaeology) and the Historical Institute (Prof. Dr. Dorothea Rohde, Ancient
History) of the University of Cologne, Germany
Join us for our first archaeological and historical Summer School in Pompeii, Rome and
Ostia in July 2025! Over the course of nine days, participants will explore Roman urban
life and urban planning in these three unique cities. How did people live, work, and
worship in the ancient world? An intensive three-day programme in each site covers
public and private living spaces, burial practices, religion, and the economy. Combining
theory and hands-on experience, the programme includes engaging lectures, guided
explorations, workshops and discussions with various experts of local institutions as
well as visits of the German Archaeological Institute and the German Historical Institute.
Funding
This Summer School is kindly supported by COLOGNE SUMMER SCHOOLS, which
covers travel costs (up to 250 Euro) and accommodation for 16 participants from
Germany and abroad. A personal contribution of 250 Euro is required from each student.
Who can apply?
We welcome BA (final-year) and MA students in Classical Archaeology and Ancient
History.
Requirements
▪ Availability to participate in the full programme: 02.05. preliminary meeting
(hybrid via Zoom), 27.06.-28.06. block seminar (hybrid via Zoom), 12.07.-20.07.
Summer School (on-site in Italy)
▪ Enrolment in an archaeology or history programme at a German or international
university
▪ Sufficient knowledge of English to be able to follow lectures, make short
presentations and take part in discussions.
▪ A valid ID (passport or national ID card) to enter Italy
▪ An international health insurance for the duration of the Summer School
(Auslandskrankenversicherung)

• A motivation letter explaining why you wish to participate (1 page)
• A CV detailing your academic background and any relevant experience (max. 2
pages)
• Transcript of Records / Overview of your current grades
Participation in the Summer School can be credited with 6 ECTS.
