King’s College Cambridge
Mervyn King Research Fellowship in Economic History
King’s College Cambridge is delighted to launch the Mervyn King Research Fellowship and invites applications from those working in all areas of Economic History including the History of Economics.
Applications are welcome from all those who wish to undertake a major project over the course of the four years of this Fellowship. The brief is deliberately wide to encourage creative thinking, and applicants should not unduly restrict themselves to any single academic discipline nor necessarily focus on a traditionally identified paradigm.
The ideal candidate for this Research Fellowship will have a strong background in a relevant area of work and be completing or have completed recently an outstanding doctoral thesis. It is not a requirement that the candidate’s doctoral studies or the work that they submit in support of their application should have concerned this topic specifically, but candidates will be expected to show in their applications how their plans for their future work relate to the work that they have already done. The successful candidate will be expected to engage broadly with the whole college community.
It is the aim of King’s Research Fellowships to develop important fields of study that are currently too narrowly restricted in their practitioners and/or their objects of analysis. For this reason, candidates are encouraged to propose creative and innovative projects which will not only make an important contribution to the specific area of interest, but also strengthen the intellectual framework of the humanities as a whole.
The successful candidate will join a lively research community which includes Research Fellows and College Research Associates as well as Fellows who hold University posts. This includes a number of Fellows working in Economics, History, and Politics which will potentially align with the successful candidate’s project, and a wide range of other subjects which will provide both challenge to and stimulus for novel ways of approaching it. Research Fellows also engage with colleagues from the Collegiate University as a whole in the pursuit of their project.
A Research Fellowship is a postdoctoral position tenable for up to four years. Applications are welcome from graduates of any university. Candidates will usually have completed their PhD or equivalent qualification, but must not have undertaken more than 2 years postdoctoral work or work outside of academia by 1 October 2025 (i.e., an applicants PhD cannot have been granted before 30 September 2023).
Research Fellows are members of the Governing Body, with the full privileges of all Fellows. These include all meals, a degree of financial support for expenses associated with research, and the possibility of an office and accommodation in College properties. Currently, the stipend of a Research Fellow is £24,126 prior to the award of doctorate, or £26,807 after award of doctorate, rising each year to a maximum of £30,912. An accommodation allowance of £3,530 is paid to all Stipendiary Research Fellows, and an additional living-out allowance of up to £4,000, depending on income, is available to those Fellows not living in college-owned accommodation.
In addition to pursuing research, a Research Fellow is required to live in Cambridge or close by and to participate in College life and activity. Although these are research posts, Research Fellows are encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to undertake a small amount of University or College teaching, or tutorial duties. Such activity is remunerated separately and can make an important contribution to the development of an academic career. During the course of the Fellowship, a Research Fellow may be granted an intermission for one or two years to take up a temporary position either in Cambridge or elsewhere provided that doing so would be consistent with the Research Fellow’s career development.
The closing date for applications, including references, is 9 am on Monday 16 September 2024. Further information about the College may be obtained from the College website<https://www.kings.cam.ac.uk/>.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Stellenbosch and Western Cape
Applications are awaited for a postdoctoral fellowship hosted by the Universities of Stellenbosch and the Western Cape.
Project Title: Responsive Governance and Population Well-being in Late Antiquity
Project Description: Scholarship on Late Antiquity has established that the later Roman Empire employed response mechanisms for more effective and directive governance. How such governance relates to the common good and population well-being is less researched and more difficult to describe. The current collaborative project (Ghent University, Stellenbosch University, University of the Western Cape) aims at investigating the reciprocal relationship between imperial structures and the general populace of the empire. The topic is studied from a top-down perspective (laws, speeches, treatises issued from the top of the social hierarchy) as well as a bottom-up perspective which was communicated to those in executive capacities able to improve the quality of life of lower social strata (petitions, acclamations, the 'common good' implied in ideologies of the ideal state and good rulership, economic and social advances, philosophical notions on happiness, medical ideas of good health, environmental impacts) .
Hosts: Prof. Philip Bosman (Stellenbosch University and Prof. Ernst Conradie (University of the Western Cape)
Requirements:
* Ph.D. in Late Antique (Roman Imperial) History and Literature, or a related subject field in Classics (graduation within the last five years).
* Evidence of the ability to publish in national and international journals.
The post-doctoral fellowship package includes: A monthly stipend and workspace.
Commencement date: 1 January 2025
Closing date: 31 August 2024
Enquiries:Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! Zur Anzeige muss JavaScript eingeschaltet sein. <Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! Zur Anzeige muss JavaScript eingeschaltet sein. >
Application: Send a letter of application, accompanied by an academic record and a comprehensive curriculum vitae including a list of publications, and the names and contact details of at least two referees, toDiese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! Applicants should request their referees to forward confidential reports by the closing date directly to the same address.
Further notes:
* The fellowship is renewable for a second year subject to satisfactory performance.
* The successful candidate will be required to stay in the greater Cape Town area for at least 9 months per annum.
* The postdoctoral fellow will be required to do research and publish research results related to the research project as formulated for the South African side of the project. Further research related tasks include conference organisation and coordination and editing of an edited volume on the research topic.
* The postdoctoral fellow will be affiliated to both the University of Stellenbosch and the University of the Western Cape.
* The Postdoctoral Office at Stellenbosch University assists postdoctoral fellows with logistical arrangements, including support for visa applications, temporary accommodation at Stellenbosch University, airport transport upon arrival, and registration on the University system.
* Postdoctoral fellows are not appointed as employees and as their fellowships are awarded tax-free, they are not eligible for employee benefits.
* The University reserves the right NOT to make an appointment if suitable candidates do not apply. -

Advertisement of 2 Scholarships for Doctoral Studies (October 2025 - September 2029) in the Doctoral
Program “Ancient Objects and Visual Studies”
The Graduate School Scholarship Program (GSSP) of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is offering two (2) doctoral scholarships to earn a PhD within the framework of “Ancient Objects and Visual
Studies” doctoral program of the BerGSAS, https://www.berliner-antike-kolleg.org/en/bergsas/index.html
We welcome applications from highly qualified graduates from the fields of:
Ancient Oriental Studies, Classical Archaeology, Egyptology and Northeast African Archaeology, Near Eastern
Archaeology, or Prehistoric Archaeology.
Applicants must hold an outstanding master's degree (MA, MSt, or MSc) or equivalent in one of the
aforementioned disciplines or be very close to completion.
Objectives of the doctoral program “Ancient Objects and Visual Studies”
The doctoral program, https://www.berliner-antike-kolleg.org/bergsas/programme/aovis/index.html
is concerned, among other things, with the effects of images and the mechanisms that make up
communication with images. Key questions are: Who produces images and for whom? What message do
these images convey? What are the elements of meaning (image ciphers) that make up the semantic field
of images? To what extent can images be (or not) precisely determined in their semantic content? Such
questions need to be explored by looking at the archaeological or historical object or artifact in its
respective cultural context. Starting from the individual object, the general cultural influences on the
perception of images should be worked out. Furthermore, the knowledge of the respective functioning of
ancient images and artifacts should be combined with the contemporary possibilities of visual
presentation. International perspectives are highly welcome here, especially those that question both the
European-influenced role of images and the role of the museums.

intended to provide financial support for the researcher in the preparation and drafting of a
third-party funding application with the aim of acquiring an own position with relevant funding
bodies. The primary aim of the grant is therefore to give qualified early-career researchers an
opportunity for realizing an original research idea and thus to further develop their own
scientific career. It is also possible to prepare a combined or network application together with
other parties. Cooperation with the KU, in particular with the members of the research training
group, is desired.
Funding is provided for a period of six months; a one-time extension for a further six months
is possible in case of outstanding performance. The selected grant beneficiary will receive a
lump sum grant amount of € 2,500 per month. In addition to financial support, the grant

supported in applying for third-party funding. There is also the opportunity to participate in
events organized by the "Dialogkulturen" research training group and to be involved in its activities.
Application requirements include a completed doctorate with above-average results and
commitment to applying for third-party funding for their own research project on aspects of
dialog cultures, either independently or in collaboration with others. The application documents
should include:
1. Cover letter/letter of motivation (no longer than 2 pages)
2. Fully completed application form
3. Short outline of planned research project (no longer than 6 pages) including information
on possible funding institutions to which an application will be submitted, as well as a timeline
and work plan for the funding period
4. Résumé in table form including list of publications to date
5. Copy of the doctoral certificate
Applications can be submitted in German or English to the Research Training Group
"Dialogkulturen" by August 15, 2024. Please combine all application documents in one PDF
document and send it to the coordination office of the group (forschungskolleg-Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! Zur Anzeige muss JavaScript eingeschaltet sein. ). Please note that only complete applications will be considered in the
selection process. A selection committee appointed by the members of the research training
group shall decide on the award of the grant. Selection criteria include the relevance and
compatibility of the research topic to the research group's priorities, the originality and quality
of the research project and previous research achievements. Applicants will be informed of the
decision in a timely manner. Funding can be provided from October 1, 2024, at the earliest.
There is no legal entitlement to funding.

The Classics Department of Heidelberg University is inviting applications for two three-year postdoctoral fellowships to commence on December 1, 2024.
Your tasks:
The postdoctoral fellows will be part of a Leibniz research group on ancient aesthetics under the direction of Jonas Grethlein. The group will focus on explicit and implicit aesthetic reflections in a wide range of literary genres and non-textual media from the Archaic age to the Imperial era. While all topics in this field are welcome, special interest will be given to projects that explore one of the following three themes:
- a) the relation of aesthetics with ethics: inquiries into the ethical dimension of aesthetics and its challenges to the modern ideal of aesthetic autonomy.
- b) scale: inquiries into size, length and other measurements that at first glance appear to be simple and objective characteristics of texts and works of art, but upon closer inspection turn out to be highly charged.
- c) media: inquiries into the manifold relations between and entanglements of various media of representation such as text, performance, image, sculpture and dance.
Applicants need to have a PhD or equivalent degree in Classics.
We offer:
The fellows will pursue their own research project and participate in the intellectual life of the Heidelberg Classics department. The salary will be based on TV-L E13. The fellowships are limited to three years. Heidelberg University stands for equal opportunities and diversity. Qualified female candidates are especially invited to apply. Persons with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are equally qualified. Information on job advertisements and the collection of personal data is available at www.uni-heidelberg.de/en/job-market.
Applications should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a writing sample (either an article or a dissertation chapter), an abstract of the research project (2-4 pages) and two letters of reference. Please send the material as a pdf to

Jul 03Mittwoch, 03. Juli 2024 10:52The Ghent Centre for Late Antiquity, Ghent University (https://www.gcla.ugent.be/) is offering four PhD fellowships as part of the ERC Advanced Grant Project New Polities. Political Thought in the First Millennium, directed by Prof. P. Van Nuffelen.YOUR JOB
- The New Polities project studies political thought in Late Antiquity (ca. 300-900 AD). Rather than considering this as the time when the ancient city-state gave way to monarchy and when rationality became subordinate to religious texts, the project argues that we see in Late Antiquity a wide range of new religious and political communities that adopted and modified classical ideas and thus developed a rich political thought. By studying sources in other languages than just Latin and Greek, New Polities will uncover neglected traditions of political thought from the first millennium AD, from the Roman Empire to the Abbasids, Byzantines and Carolingians.
- The four PhD students will write a doctoral dissertation on a topic related to the project’s aims, including (but not limited to) concepts of social relations, kingship, utopias, virtue, economic thought and the relation between society and nature. Their topic should relate to sources in Greek, Latin, Syriac, Armenian, and/or Georgian.
- You contribute to a database of commented passages on first millennium political thought.
- You participate in, and co-organize, team meetings, workshops and conferences.
Job profile- You hold (or will hold one by the starting date) a Master’s degree in a relevant field, including (but not limited to) Classics & Ancient History, History, Theology and Religious Studies, Philosophy, and Oriental Studies.
- You have a very good knowledge of at least one of the relevant languages (Greek, Latin, Syriac, Armenian or Georgian). Knowledge of two or more languages and cultures, or a willingness to acquire additional languages (including Hebrew, Persian and Arabic), is an advantage.
- You have an interest in working across different traditions and in comparative research.
- You have an interest in engaging with other disciplines, in particular philosophy and the history of political thought.
- Knowledge of Digital Humanities, or a willingness to acquire this, is an advantage.
- Whilst capable of doing independent work, you are willing to work in a team.
- You have good organizational skills.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU- We offer a full-time position as a doctoral fellow, consisting of an initial period of 12 months, which, after a positive evaluation, will be extended to a total maximum of 48 months.
- Your contract will start on 1/3/2025 at the earliest and on 1/10/2025 at the latest.
- The fellowship amount is around 2500 euro/month. It is equal to 100% of the net salary of an AAP member in equal family circumstances. The individual fellowship amount is determined by the Department of Personnel and Organization based on family status and seniority. A grant that meets the conditions and criteria of the regulations for doctoral fellowships is considered free of personal income tax. Click here for more information about our salary scales
