DARWIN COLLEGE CAMBRIDGE
Darwin College invites applications for election to a stipendiary Moses and Mary Finley Research Fellowship in Ancient History starting from 1 October 2023.
The Fellowship is available for research into economic, social or political history of any period and (unlike the Finley Ancient History Fellowship) is not confined to specialists in Greek or Roman history, although they are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to those whose interests coincide with those of the late Sir Moses Finley. Darwin College is able to elect this stipendiary Research Fellow thanks to a bequest in the Will of Sir Moses and Lady Finley. In addition, Sir Moses bequeathed his personal library to the College. This may assist the research of the successful candidate.
Eligibility
The Fellowship is open to candidates from any university, irrespective of age.
The Fellowship is intended for an outstanding researcher who is completing, or who has recently completed, their PhD Degree, or an equivalently recognised degree. No candidate should normally have completed in total more than three years of research since the PhD is conferred by 1 October 2023. Any career breaks or part-time working will be taken into account.
Duties and conditions
The Research Fellow is expected to pursue full-time research based in Cambridge.
The Research Fellow will be a member of the Governing Body of Darwin College and will be subject to the Statutes and Ordinances of the College. The Statutes include the obligation to reside in or near Cambridge, for at least two-thirds of each University term, but the Governing Body will normally excuse absences made necessary by the nature of the research undertaken.
Tenure
The Research Fellowship is tenable for three years, with effect from 1 October 2023 and is renewable for one further year to a maximum of four years at the discretion of the Fellowships Committee.
Stipend and Emoluments
The starting stipend for the Finley Research Fellow with a PhD will be set at not less than Point 28 on the Darwin College Single Salary spine (2022-23 rate: £24,059.29), subject to annual cost-of-living uplift and to annual increments (the third year stipend at the 2022-23 rate would be £25,858.82). The stipend will be subject to a 10% reduction until the appointee’s PhD is conferred.
Membership of the Universities’ Superannuation Scheme is optional.
Research Fellows are entitled under the College’s Ordinances to dine (including formal hall) and lunch free of charge at the normal College table whenever meals are served (up to a limit of seven meals in each week). Guests, not normally exceeding two in number on any one occasion, may be entertained at lunch or dinner, ten of them free of charge within any quarter (note termly guest nights with a special menu are subject to charge).
An allowance of up to £1,000 a year will be available for receipted travel and research expenses. A further £500 a year is available on application as a subsidy for appropriate conferences mounted in the College.
It may be possible to provide limited rented accommodation for up to two years, subject to availability, for which a charge will be made.
A non-pensionable additional allowance of £3,000 per annum (subject to annual review) will be paid to any Finley Research Fellow not resident in College.
Applications
Applications should be made by 2 October 2022 at:
https://app.casc.cam.ac.uk/fas_live/darfinley.aspx
and include:
(a) curriculum vitae;
(b) a summary of research, in not more than 500 words, for a non-specialist audience

Institute for Research in the Humanities, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Call for Applications 2023-2024
Deadline: Thursday, October 27, 2022
Through the generous bequests of Robert M. Kingdon and Friedrich and Lieselotte Solmsen, the Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is pleased to announce competitions for two Robert M. Kingdon Fellowships and four Solmsen Fellowships for the academic year 2023-2024, to be awarded to scholars from outside the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Kingdon Fellowships sponsor scholars working in the humanities in the historical, literary, artistic, and/or philosophical studies of Christian and/or Jewish religious traditions and their role in society. Projects may focus on any period from antiquity to the present, on any part of the world, and in any field(s) in the humanities. They may explore various forms of the Jewish and/or Christian traditions; the interaction of one or both of these with other religious traditions; and/or the relationship of one or both of these religions to other aspects of society within or outside of Europe.
Solmsen Fellowships are to be awarded to scholars working in the humanities on European history, literature, philosophy, politics, religion, art and culture in the classical, medieval, and/or early modern periods (before 1700). Projects on the relationship of pre-1700 Europe to other parts of the world are also welcome.
Kingdon and Solmsen Fellows are expected to be in residence at the IRH throughout the academic year (except for short research trips, lectures, conferences, etc.) and may extend this residency through the following summer on a non-stipendiary basis. However, the fellowship may not be deferred for any reason. The award provides a stipend of $60,000, office space, support services, and access to all university facilities. Fellows are expected to present their work at an Institute seminar and participate in the weekly seminars. Applicants must be in possession of the doctorate at the time of application.
Applications are due Thursday, October 27, 2022. Notification of awards will be made by early March. Scholars with projects applicable to both fellowship calls are welcome to apply to both the Kingdon and Solmsen competitions.
Access full calls and links to the digital applications here: https://irh.wisc.edu/irh-fellowships/ (scroll down to "External Fellowships").
